Suggestions needed, please.

Hi,

It's been a while since I've been here ... time flies, doesn't it?

I need some suggestions for craft items I can make for two middle aged men. Knitting clothing it out because they both have birthdays coming up in April and May and I don't think I could knit two sweaters in that amount of time.

I'm at a loss as to what to do. I've run a couple of searches for "crafting gifts for men" and only get sites that want to sell me their crafted gifts for men.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Murielle

If they cook, you might consider doing a couple of jars of cookie mix with the recipe attached. Or floor pillows (purchased pillow, cover made of 5" denim squares sewn together with 1/2" seam allowances and tossed into the laundry to fray nicely and then finished with zippers). Or (with spring coming) some pots planted with herbs or flowers. Or (for beer drinkers), a gift certificate for a keg to be delivered on the date selected by the recipient.

Do they ever wear gloves or mittens? How about fingerless mittens? They keep your hands warm while leaving the fingers free to handle keys, carry small packages, etc. If they drive, the covering over the palm helps protect the hand from the cold steering wheel. I'm told that most men don't wear really bright colored knitwear, not even as socks, so a quiet brown or gray would probably be best. If they were done in ribbing then they'd be stretchy enough so the size wouldn't be that specific. You might not even have to knit a thumb, just make an opening in one side.

Hi Mary,

Thanks so much for your suggestions. I think one may drink beer. :-)

Hi Tamar,

I like this idea for Christmas. I find men so difficult to "make" for. Women are no trouble at all, there are so many things to choose from, but the men in my life are a problem for me.

It is difficult sometimes, isn't it, especially when some men are so choosy about styles and colors.

Simple ribbed or cabled driving mitts might be useful now if it's still cold at night where they live. I'm still wearing scarves and hats here in MD.

Not really, cold enough for gloves and scarves. Being so near the mountains we are blessed with severely disturbed weather. We're expecting snow this weekend. ::sigh:: but it's not really cold.

But the fingerless gloves will be really cool for Christmas. And! I found a pattern for them among my craft mag stash.

I finally decided to make a pencil frame for the upcoming birthday. Found it in a magazine I've had for years. I never throw my craft mags away. ;-))
