Need quilting suggestions

Not too long ago I got a cat wall hanging pattern from Donna from this group, who was clearing out some of her excess patterns. (THANKS AGAIN!) It's a cat sitting sort of wrapped around a sewing machine. I've been working on it this week. The cat/machine part is all appliqued, and then there is a frame and a border of pinwheel blocks.

I've got the appliqued panel finished and am working on the pinwheel blocks. The instructions say "quilt as desired." I have absolutely no idea how to quilt the appliqued part. The panel is 22 1/2" X 22

1/2" and so the cat and the sewing machine are quite large and they definitely need quilting on them, but I don't have a clue as to what to do. The background is a patterned dark teal, the cat is light gray, and the machine is a speckled tan.

Do I quilt an overall design over the whole thing using one color or a nylon thread, or should I do different stitching on each piece, like "fur lines" on the cat, a grid on the machine, and a random stipple on the background? I honestly don't know what to do!

HELP!!! :) Carole in Northwest GA - Retired and loving it! Homepage -

I would definitely use different patterns on the three distinct sections, Carole. Cat fur lines are not too difficult - I have had a go at that! Background stipple is fine, as it will make the appliqué section stand out. I'm not sure about the machine? It will look lovely, I'm sure. . In message , Carole-Retired and Loving It writes

I wish I had a picture of the quilt in question. The cat quilting depends so much on the type of cat applique. You might want to add more definition to the cat's shape, or just do fur lines.

For the machine could you quilt a scrolling pattern like the old fashioned black machines used to have? You could even use gold colored thread to make it look like the same kind of decorative scrollwork.

The background could be quilted with a small diamond grid, or you could pick something from the print pattern to use as a quilting motif and repeat it, or simply stipple it. Debra in VA See my quilts at

Here is a WebShots link to the wall hanging in process. The cat gets buttons for eyes and embroidered features. The machine gets buttons on the right as knobs and dials. Most of the pinwheels won't be pink like these, but will be the background fabric in place of the pin. The pink will be randomly placed just to add a punch.

I might be able to do a scrolling design on the machine, although the shape of the machine is more modern than old. I'll have to ponder that.

The background fabric does lend it self to following the pattern design with a stipple-like effect. I think it's the cat itself that is bothering me the most.

That's probably what I will do. I loved my fabric even though it wasn't supposed to be fur!

It was given to me, but a couple of other people have posted links in this thread about where it can be found. It's "Sew Spoiled" pattern #227 by Mary Lou & Company.

Nana2B is going to make me a machine-embroidered "Elna" patch to go on it, so that will help! I actually have some variegated thread that might show up pretty well for a scroll design.

That would be really neat, although I'm not sure my free-motion skills are quite that good! I'd have to practice on something first.

Thanks for the ideas!
