Need a WebTV helper

Jan 15, 2005 17 Replies

Hi all,

I am continuously trying to make the webpage easily accessible by all our members, especially our members on WebTV who face more challenges than those on a computer even on dialup. I also often have questions on how well things are working. I would really appreciate knowing for example:

A. How well and fast does the Dec 2005 challenge page load for you? Should I make the pictures smaller or does it work for you as is?

B. How fast is the load on the California stores? Should I get rid of the eyelet images to make the pages load faster, or is the load time acceptable.

C. Can you use the main site

formatting link
or do you prefer to fo to
formatting link
the page without the static pictures and links? I know that I use the home.htm when looking the website up on my palm pilot.

D. I am creating a new member page that will replace the easy load page. This page will be by country and state, has a link to the member's bio page as well as showing the links to their layout pages and personal webpage. I want to add a flag for each country. Will the flags make loading the page a problem for webTv viewers?

and finally

E. Would one of you be willing to be myWebTV tester. You would need to get back to me the same day and provide me with your telephone number so that we can work together on a page over the phone.

Thanks,

Well, I like the home.htm page a lot better than the other one. I didn't know it existed. I bookmarked it and will take the other link out of my folder. The flags don't seem to slow anything down for me M-C. I haven't had time yet to check out the CA lss reviews. I'll let you know as soon as I do. Thanks so much for trying to make this as accessible as possible for all of us. You're the bestest webmistress!

Thanks Katrina, can you also tell me how hard it is for you to load the December Challenge page? I need to figure out if I should make the ictures smaller or if the load time is somewhat reasonable for you guys.

Thanks

MC, I would be tickled to help out!!! (since you are not only th ebESTEST but the seetest!) Heck, I am told FLATTERY gets you everything or is that everywhere?

As of this morning (Sunday 1000 hrs) this is my evaluation/finding.

The site links. The first one looks the best to the eye and loads respectively ok. The second one, well as they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but it loads like raight now!

In the first one, store links. from th ehp it takes you to a menu where you select local, online, etc. those links don't work. I clicked on them and NOTHING. Thing just sits there. I went to the second site and clicked on stores. Same menu came up but again from that menu nothing worked.

For challenges. There needs to be a menu selection on the left for the months. In both sites the links work, but on th efirst one the first page where you select '2004' it loads REAL SLOW, I believe because of everyone's pix that are there. Yoy have to go thru ALL the year to get to Dec. Because it was being SO SLOW, I stopped at March and went to second site to check it out.

That site when the menu came up to select '2004 Challenges', the link did not work.

Hope this helps and again I would be pleased to be of assistance - Ma'am!!!

nada for 05 (unless adding to and redoing some pages counts!)

Dave tells me he posted to this thread, but I can't see it. Can anyone? On the other server I check there are no answers at all to this thread, wierd! I guess I'll go and check google. This of course means that if you ask a question and it doesn't get answered, I or the person you are addressing the question to is likely not ignoring you or upset at you. They may simply not have seen the post! Perhaps someone who sees Dave's post can reply to the group with his post attached???

Thanks,

M-C, Dave's post follows below. I stand corrected, but I think Katrina also responded to this thread. (unfortunately I deleted that one allready).

From my side. I use a 56k dial-up modem and 99% of the time everything works perfectly :)

Thanks to everyone and Kenda! Dave's post finally showed up just as yours did! Sabrina and/or Katrina, can you now take a look at what Dave wrote and tell me if you have the same problems? That will help a lot! And does anyone else not on WebTV have these same problems?

M-C

M-C I can see Daves post not sure how to make it attached to this but I'll see if this works. Linda(LIN)

M-C,

Here's a re-post of Dave's post replying to you. Hope you see this one.

Thanks,

Well, I still haven't checked out the store reviews yet. I did check both challenge pages. I didn't like that you have to scroll all the way to the bottom to get the link for the Dec. challenge. I can get to the bottom in the click of a button though, so that's okay. On the .home page it loaded instantly. The other wasn't too bad, but instant is better. The pics aren't too big to load. They looked real good.

How come you have links that say "open this page in a new window" on every page? I found that if I don't do that then when I hit the back button I'm thrown completely out of the website and back into my faves folder. Fortunately I don't have to open in a new window on the .home site. Why didn't you share that address w/ us sooner? I love the .home rcs website so much better than the other fancy one. I suggest that you use this address for webtvers and the other for regular computerers. Is it possible to put them both in your signature?

Hopefully by now you can see all the posts in this thread. I'm off to check out the CA lss's now and see how the reviews look. Get back to ya later.

LOL, I did share the home page when I first gave out the url. But you have a point, and I will put it in my signture block as well. It is also the better way to go if you want to see the site on a cellphone/palm pilot.

The actual pages are identican for both groups. I honestly can't make completely separate pages. However if you go in via the main page

formatting link
, as I prefer to do since it keeps the directory to the main pages handy, you cannot oepn the page in another window without the link. I figured that there might be times when someone prefers to see the information of a full page, so it's there just to help those that want to open the page to full size.

Well I took over the website late in 2004 and I just didn't rewrite all the pages. I did not continue as my predecessor, which was to add all the pictures on the same page, but then again I didn't have a chance to eliminate all the pictures and divide each month into separate pages. I hope that you like how 2005 works better. If I get a chance, I'll rewrite the 2004 page. As long as I keep the website, I'll do my best to do things in such a way that most people can get to things easily and use the website as a reference point.

I checked out the lss pages. I also sent you a couple of reviews. I suggest that you write the # of eyelets in the listing. Mine loaded everything except the eyelets. Even on the page you sent me for the eyelet rating chart the eyelets didn't show up. Well, the first one (1 eyelet) did, but nothing else.

Katrina in KS

OK, will do, Katrina.

Dave and Katrina, would you please go and check the "new" 2004 Challenges page. Hope this helps. Just click from the link that you find in the following page.

Katrina, I got your email though I haven't had a chance to open it yet, was working on the other stuff. I will go back and change the eyelet rating chart and as I go through the stores again, I'll change those to words as well.

Well I need to go do some scrapping, oh and food might be nice too!

Aw, I did post about this but I seem to miss a lot. I didn't have any trouble ,M-C. I really appreciate that you are trying to make the site available to all. Thank you so much.

I agree about the slow loading....but my WEBTV loads everything sooo slowly! I think it is a webtvthing. It is taking me longer and longer to read my e-mails even. By the by....I think Dave would be an excellent WEb tv helper. He is more knowledgeable than most and he is very articulate.

Both pages loaded instantly for me. At the bottom of the challenges page though, I'm not sure if there're supposed to be pics or not. On mine there aren't any but it looks like maybe there should be. Thanks for all your hard work w/ the website and trying to make it "friendly" for all of us M-C. It's appreciated and I'm glad to be of any help to you.

I could be wrong, but I think what you're seeing is the empty tables that were there to add the layouts to. I didn't bother taking them out.

Glad they loaded quickly. I appreciate both your and Dave's input. It helps, alot!
