Need inspiration and advice

Arghh. I keep meaning to do some pages with my photos from DragonCon, a Sci-Fi/Fantasy convention I go to every year. I work on tech staff, and I also participate in the skits we do for the video presentation. So, the photos I have are mostly of tech staff people hanging out "behind the scenes" and a few of when we were filming an X-Men/James Bond parody.

So, ok, I have pictures of kind of scary looking, very tired, grungy, drunk guys and gals. I've got pics of us making food and doing silly things with knives, pics of people sleeping under tables, pics of this one guy's leg that we wrote inappropriate things on in sharpie marker while he was sleeping, etc.

And, I have pictures of me and my sister dressed as Bond girls while tying a dude to a wheelchair, and other pics of us waiting until our scene was shot.

I was going to do an 8x8 book, so I could print my own patterned papers, but I think I'd rather do 12x12 so I have more room for photo groupings and journalling. But, there aren't really any scrapbook papers and embellishments that actually, you know, go with what I'm doing. Are there? Not at my local stores, anyway. I could still do my own patterned paper and use it like I used on my cat layout:

But I still have no idea what kind of a pattern to do! Or should I use the pretty 12x12 papers that I really like but that are all floral and pretty and don't go with the photos at all? Or should I just do solid colors? Or do you all have any ideas? I have like a week and a half off work and no plans at all, so I really want to get this done. But I need something, some kind of jumping off point, something that grabs my imagination, and so far I have nothing. Please don't just say "Whatever you want to do is fine" because I don't know what I want to do. I'll appreciate any advice. Oh, and Happy Holidays!

Wow sounds like the Ren Faires I used to work. hahaha How fun!

You could do any and all of your suggestion. My first thought as I read was I could see some paper piecings of either a dragon, swords, knives. Also I love papers that have no pattern really, but have colors swirled, washed, sponged etc. You could do some painting yourself to get the colors you like. I needed a specific color combo for a LO and I used a sponge brush and dragged some color across a page. It really turned out nice. See link below to get an idea.

If above link doesn't work click below go to challenges album and look for "2006 in review."

I also thought your Kitty paper worked really well using it in the middle. Was I any help at all?

It doesn't sound like 'pretty' papers would do the trick at all to me... what are your favourite colours? I think I'd mostly do the album in a fairly plain style using textures and colour/s rather than patterns... As for embellishments, brads and buttons and fibers go with anything. :) (and think 'Hollywood' for the filming page/s...)

DragonCon? Would that happen to have anything to do with the Dragons of PERN by any chance?! One of my all-time favorite book series. I started reading in the mid-70s, and still do to this day. :-)

I'm not sure if you are looking for techie ideas/graphics/designs, or dragon ones? Here's some James Bond gifs/graphics you might use for your JB caper:

You might also put pics of the various Bond actors around a page or two (solid background) to reinforce the images you are scrapping...how about the title, "Bondage, James Bondage" for your page? ;-) On the ones where you/others are waiting, maybe clock graphics in the background? Various kinds? Stamps, stickers, printed ones, etc.

That's all I can think of at this time, maybe if you posted some of the pics I could come up with more ideas. :-)

Happy holidays to you, too, Luna!

Luna, I think you have some cool ideas, but your don't have a printer that will allow you to do what you really want to do. Sooo...I suggest that you use a solid color as your foundation...black, grey, or sci-fi green. Then make the sci-fi papers you want in 8.5x11. You can scan the conference tickets or the DragonCon logo and make a scatter effect. Use this paper to tear, rip, mat and basically cover 80% of your solid color. I love the look of torn paper. It makes a simple boarder if you tear a single side the entire length and then attach it to the solid background leaving an inch or so exposed.

Hope this helps!

Yes, thank you! I could totally do some painting myself, I was thinking of doing that for another project and I'd forgotten. Or maybe it was this one.

For some reason I'm thinking that dragons, swords, and knives would work great for fan photos, and though we are fans we are first and foremost workers. People go to the con for all sorts of reasons, some to play roleplaying games, some to meet celebrities, some to see hot chicks in skimpy costumes, some to shop, but we go because we're all friends with each other and we get a kick out of working hard and solving problems and then partying hard and getting drunk and making each other laugh with inside jokes all night when we're off shift.

It sounds like this is something really fun for you. I do think the 12 x 12 would be a better size. You'll have the space to do the photo groupings you want, and still have room to journal all the explanations behind the antics. I'm not seeing a real pattern with your descriptions of the pics, but more artistic, non-descript type patterns. I like Lynne's idea of painting your backgrounds. You could even paint a piece of 12 x 12 cardstock, then cut it up for mats, etc, instead of having it your background. HTH!

Whenever I need inspiration I do a search on Two Peas... Here are two that came up.

If I was doing a theme album I would choose two colors of cardstock and maybe one or two patterned papers and keep the theme through out. I would use Letter stickers or rub ons for titles and brads to decorate. Just simple. I like how Turqoise and black looks...

That's a cool idea. I don't think I could mentally stand to use the same look on every page, even in a themed book, lol. I got some inspiration from the kind readers here, and I used it to make one page, and I'll post a link in a new topic, thanks!

I don't exactly make every page the same but I use the same papers in different ways. So each page looks different but similar. This is only on a theme album. I have other albums where every page is different.

Well, so far I have the filming page I posted, and now I have another page with pics of my badges. I didn't scrap the actual badges, because we tend to wear all our old badges every year, so I scanned them and printed them. On that page I finally went "duh! pirates!"

We've nicknamed ourselves Techops pirates, because, I dunno why exactly. But that gives me my visual hook, so I made a skull and crossed swords background paper that I'll be using on several pages I think. So the filming page won't match, but that's ok.
