Yesterday was "Gas Hysteria Day" in Atlanta. Once the rumors started about the broken pipeline from the Gulf and major gas shortages, people seemed to go mad. Every station in the city was crammed with people trying to fill up, and many stations did run dry. Prices soared, especially in east Atlanta. Some stations were as high as $6 a gallon. Things have stabled somewhat today. A lot of stations are still empty, but the news is reporting that the broken pipeline (not much of a break to begin with) is fixed and running, and prices seem to be settling at about $3.20 a gallon. I hope it will come down as more stations get supplies and open back up. I was lucky, as my car was filled a couple days ago (at $2.69 a gallon- I thought *that* was outrageous), so my only concession to the panic was a locking gas cap. I suspect we will all need them in the not too distant future. Maybe working in a jail has made me too cynical.
