OT: Hello Again

Yes.... the wandering Susan has returned. A new computer later, a new country later and here I am :D

We left VA this May and arrived in Heidelberg Germany to see how another of our military branches lives. We are still in the AF, but army calls us to duty this time around. It's another world to say the least LOL

I've not had time nor made any friends nearby who scrap, YET. There is a wife in our group here that does scrap and lives in the next village over. I just need to get the house set up to actually invite people over LOL

For those new since I was last here... I'm Susan, AF wife to David, mom to CG (12 yo in 7th grade), Matthew who will be 4 in December and mom to an angel, Gareth who was 2. We've been married 14 years (and celebrated a month late in Zurich Switzerland) and playing AF for 13 years. Ohio is home to us, hour west of Pitt PA. I scrap, stamp, knit, crochet and cross stitch, when time allows. You can check out my work, old as it is since i've done so little since arriving, at webshots with the user name cgsmom3.

Dave, we love it here! I still need to learn the language but venture to say you were asking how we were :D We actually live 20 minutes south of Heidelberg in a village of about 2000 people. They have 2 wonderful backereis! Both within walking distance sadly LOL the dream would have been to have a place ABOVE one :D We've been to the Black Forest and got my required cuckoo clock, Neuschwanstein and of course Switzerland. The boys and I have ventured to Koln (Cologne to us English speakers) for dinner with a cousin who was over here for a few days, as well as Ramstein AB and Wiesbaden. Oh and Legoland! LOL I go on a Polish pottery trip in two weeks and can NOT wait to go! Will have to remember (yeah.. like i'd forget) to take the camera with me :D I've been to Frankfurt, as we flew into Rhine Main in May, then drove DH u pto the international airport to drop him off to fly home for his dad's memorial earlier this month. (FIL died in March just as we were supposed to be leaving VA) Hope to get up to Frankfurt for more siteseeing sometime soon as well as Berlin. Oh We've been to Rothenberg ob der Tauber as well. QUITE THE CITY! We hope to ski thbis winter sometime. There was snow in the Alps near Lucerne when we were there in August! So we can try glacier skiing most any time :D Heck, we just will be trying to ski for the first time (boys & I), and to think we tried the Alps first! LOL

Gotta run.. .laundry calls. matthew isn't feeling good for some reason and we can't get in until tomorrow morning.

Hi Susan and welcome in my country. I'm from Germany (Chemnitz), new to the group and to scrapbooking. I can tell you that it is quite hard to get scrapbooking supplies, especially if you are on a budget, here. But there is a store near Stuttgart

which carries a lot.

I hope you like it here!

Oh Susanne! I was hoping there was SOMEtHING here to be found :D If I didn't have a morning planned tomorrow, I'd be going then LOL Maybe Friday since it's payday :D The army has an arts & crafts center at Heidelberg (and numerous other bases as well, but apparently ours has the best scrapping stuff and I'm a bit disapopinted in it... then again, coming from VA i was in scrapping heaven LOL) that I shop but am always hoping to find new stuff elsewhere. The scrap lady at Hberg won't order me 8.5x11 cardstock, but i have a friend in the states with a website that she'll order it for me, thankfully. And she'll ship to my APO box free. I'm still learning geography and mor ethan my way around this immediate area or Ramstein... where is Chemnitz? I think I've seen that name somewhere, but not sure just where.

You can look in craft stores and you might be lucky to find some scrapbooking stuff but as I have learned it's not much and most likely not what you want. So you'll have to improvise :) There are some online shops (I can give you some links if you want). The one near to Stuttgart is the one I like best. I've been there a month ago and the sales person there where pretty nice (this means a lot in Germany ;)) and helpfull. There assortment is pretty good for Germany. I don't know if they could order you 8.5x11 cardstock and I don't think they had it there. I have noticed that this size seems not to be very popular. As I planned my album I would have liked to use this size and looked around but couldn't find much in this size. So I now use 12x12 because I think it's a common size. But even paper in this size (especially plain cardstock) is hard to get. At least I can't find much :) The army arts&craft center is probably not open to the public or is it? I haven't heard of it. But Heidelberg is pretty far away from where I live. Chemnitz is in Saxony.

You might know where Dresden is. You might have read Chemnitz on the Autobahn signs as you were in Frankfurt. Chemnitz is on A4 80 km from (before) Dresden, about 400 km (northeast) of Franktfurt. Susanne

I guess I left out that part... how long LOL

We are scheduled to be here three years on orders. Could be two or it could be more than 3. It really depends on if he promotes next year. (which we won't likely know until either LATE next year or early

2007... AF changed its handling of releasing board results... lovely mess!)

OOOOHHHH Susan, can I come and visit?!!! The balckforest area there is beautiful, but I loved the whole country!!

Suzanne is up north in what was east Germant. Dresden is a nice city and LOTS of history there. It would be a well worthwhile trip to go visit there and especially with someone who knows the area.

I will have to remember the names of the area to go crystal shopping by the old Czech border, and not up by the main area by Grafenwohr and Vilseck either! That is where to go for nutcrackers though. The best palce literally to go get anything from anywhere over there is a HUGE palce in K-town called Harry's.

A place to atke the kids for a weekend trip would be the Marklin train factory and museum in Goeppingen. That is where I was stationed the last time I was there. A real pretty city to see that has a catherdral like Koln is Ulm not far further to the east from Goepp.

Oh how I envy you there!1 BTW, are ya'll gonna be there when they close up Heidelberg? That is so sad, but nic ethat the Germans are going to get back a city so beautiful and treasured.

(tearing up in memories)

Sounds like plenty of time to really see the country and enjoy it! Have a great time while you are there. I hope to some day go and see it in the different seasons. My brother and his family went several years ago in the winter and the pictures are just gorgeous!

It's so nice to see you back w/ us Susan. Now I know where you've been! I'm glad to see that you found your way back to us from way over there. Enjoy the sightseeing. From what I've seen in pics and movies Germany looks like a pretty country.

Katrina,

What i've seen so far is gorgeous! I went up to Sembach the other day which is near Ramstein, and think it's the hidden secret to the AF! It's out in the country situated on a hill looking down over fields and homes. It's quiet, peaceful and the housing has lots of trees. Just so serene. :)

My webshots page has lots of pictures we've taken so far while over here. Since it's not winter, I have no snow pics, yet LOL Hope to in a few months :)

Susan, i thought that Semback an Bitburg were closed or maybe they are on the closing list.

Anyhow since you were over there, did ya'll go to Trier? It is the oldest city in Germany and very beautiful in the valley. You will swear you are i Rome.

One thing that you WILL/MUST do is go on a Rhine river cruise or two or three!! They are great and well worth the value. Also have ya'll been riding the bahn yet? I know when I was over there even the last time, erg, 15 years ago almost!!they were cheaper than driving and as you know VERY reliable an go everywhere!!

Is the ITT office in Heideleberg still open? The tours they open are very worthwhile. The one in K-town would have more as it is the largest community.

Boy sure wish I WAS still over there or could come back!!
