OT: scary accident today with DS

well, as some of you know Kevin (DH) started working out of town this week. i almost got the week done with no accidents until this afternoon. my DS ( 3 next week) uses any means necessary to get what he wants. well, he wanted a trophy that was on my frig and while i went to the bathroom climbed on the counter and when he heard me tried to get down fast. he fell hitting his head hard on the floor. it knocked him out for a few. then, when i got him to the ER, we had to wait for

2 hours before he was seen. i don't live in a big town. i saw two other people in there too. there were no serious injuries ( like car accidents and that sort of stuff. i was so mad. i thought a head injury where the person loses concousness (?) was fairly serious. Kenda, aren't you an EMT? am i wrong on this? no nurse saw kameron, the doctor was in there less than 5 minutes. can't wait to see this bill. anyway, he seems to be ok. his ear is bruised and it looks like he broke some blood vessels and he has quite the goosegg on the side of his forehead. anyway, thanks for letting me vent.

OH WOW!! I bet you need something to help calm you down, scare wise and anger too!!

It is so sad that EVERYWHERE there is no care anymore. ERs treat you like dirt UNLESS yo are bleeding profusely or not breathing, and in some places I have heard that is not even so - LOL!

I hope you nad ds are ok and sonds like ou need to give him some of his own trophies - LOL or keep him tied to your side.

Sorry you had to go through such a scare and then through such a frustrating wait!

My DH always says, if you want to be looked at quickly in the ER, you have to arrive in an ambulance. So while you may think that it's faster to put the inured in your car, ultimately they will get treated far more quickly if you wait for the ambulance or call 911.

Kenda, what's your take on this?

Anji - so sorry to hear about your bad experience at the Hospital. I swear we've all just become numbers in the health care system. I have felt like they don't even seem to care that I might be scared, or in pain. I could get on the same sopa box as Dave - but what's really important is that your Son is okay!!! I am glad to hear that he'll be fine!

I am not Kenda but my husband has been in EMS for 18 years and I have been in it for 5... Hospitals triage based on type of injury. If you have a minor injury and call an ambulance thinking you will be seen faster you are mistaken. In fact if you have a minor injury, most ambulance services will recommend you go to urgent care or to the ER on your own so you don't have to pay the $500+ bill. Most insurance companies will not cover transport of a non serious injury.

My goodness! What a monkey there. (I have 2 monkeys of my own. LOL) I can tell from experience, with my own DS, that when they hit their head and there is an immediate bump, they're ok. It's when they hit their hard enough for a bump and there's no bump, that's when you worry. Hopefully your DS learned something from this and won't climb as much. Glad everything's ok with him!

Anji, I would think the bruised ear would be a real concern as an ear is very hard to bruise.

You have to watch for a number of things. When DS#1 fell from the monkey bars, many years ago, and hit his head on the steel step he also lost consciousness. I was called at work. On the way to get him I called our family Dr. who said to come in and they'd xray. He couldn't see a fracture however he told me to watch him closely for the following signs, slurred speech, difficulty in waking up ( I was to rouse him every 30-45 minutes if he went to sleep this was to continue through the night). I was to gently shake him and if he didn't come around then I as to take him to the ER. I was also to watch him for changes in his behavior. Nausea/vomiting. I stopped by the store to pick up children's motrin and on the way out with him he said, "mommy I don't feel good". I had a terrible time understanding him. I immediately took him to the Children's hospital, called our DR. on the way and we were taken right back. Head injures are serious. We spent the night at the hospital, they did several CT's and he did have a skull fracture and a concussion. The xray's didn't show the fracture as it was in an odd place, that's why they did several CT's.

You are really at the mercy of the hospital staff. If you complain that you feel they are taking too long or not doing the right thing they can/and will drag their feet and take even longer just to piss you off.

I hope your DS is feeling better.
