OT:Tsunami

Hi Everybody

I don't know how much coverage the Tsunami in the Indian Ocean on Boxing Day got in the US/UK/Canada/Oz, but the people there were really hit badly. Over 150 000 people have perished at last count and it is still expected to increase.

This is a popular holiday destination for a lot of South Africans aswell (me and DH considered it for our annual vacation in April, even got the brochures), and 10 SA citizens have been confirmed deceased and 900 are still not acounted for. I've just been mailed pictures of the 2nd wave approaching the shore that day, and it's really frightning, those people really did'nt have a chance.

I was wondering if we could spare a thought for those who were affected by this tragedy - such a lot of people have lost so much in such a short time. So many children have lost their parents. This really makes me sad :(

Judy -

Thanks for bringing this up.

It is an amazing, devestating tragedy that has affected folks from all over the world.

I have a friend who was on vacation over there, and luckily was not in an area hit by the tsunami at teh time, but has now jumped into the rescue effort - I am os proud of him! He's working doing dispatch and making sure supplies get where they are most needed (He used to run a courier business here in Seattle, where he also created a "first response" program for Bike couriers to learn CPR and have access to supplies in case of an emergency.)

I would urge everyone to consider giving to the Red cross - even only $5 - to aid in the relief efforts. Thanks - that my soapbox.

I have been unable to find the words that describe the overwhelming grief and sadness I feel for the victims of the Tusnami.

The company I work for announced a matching program for all donations made by the employees. The monies will be given to the American Red Cross International Response Fund. I'm blessed to work for a company that is socially responsible.

Judy, I don't think many people realised there was so much tourist activity there. I know I didn't. I have a friend in Sweden and they were all devastated because so many of their people were there and seems everyone she knew lost someone or knew someone that was killed. She is a pre school teacher and three of her little people were lost. We have been keeping all of those stricken people in our prayers and giving aid. Thank you for your compassionate post.

This is a significant event of not only last year but of the decade. And I believe that we should honor it in rememberance through our scrapbooking efforts.

Jessica gets emails of the frontline from Brady, I hope she will consider a small scrapbook of the event that includes his letters. I have been fortunate enough to have her share the emails with me and it is undescribible the emotions that are evoked by this event. And Brady and the others like him, they really are heros.

Hi Sabrina! :)

Yes, I've also seen in the news that a lot of Swedish people were on holiday there :(( One feels so helpless when you see a little boy in hospital with a sign in front of him, asking if anybody recognizes him.... But the response from "ordinary" people, like Jessica's friend, is really heartwarming.

If anyone wishes to see the emails from my friend - I am happy to forward them on. IT's an amazing way to hear about what's going on, and I feel my friend is truly a hero.

It has hit me in that most of the people and those countries were poor anyhow. Now they literally have NOTHING. Then I saw on a special that because of the salt water, the vegetation that is left in most areas is and will die because of contamination of the soil. As a direct result of that then most wildlfe is even doomed.

Then it riles me that here in OK, there is a sorry ass they are trying to catch who is scamming in the name of the disaster. Same guy or group that did it starting with bombing back in '95. I can not figure out why our sorry system of justice just smacks those on the hand? GRRR!

They will pay I am sure some day, and if someone catches them who gave - well just like a mother over someone molesting her child! That brings up another sad thing from this disasater and unfortunately one of the bad things Thailand is known for.

I have been saying a lot of prayers for that part of the earth and give thanks for what I have.
