Trauma on Thanksgiving Day!

We went to my brothers around 1:30 pm. We were having a "seafood" Thanksgiving so I took a Thai shrimp noodle dish, sautéed scallops and shrimp, sweet potato casserole, Cajun crab dip, spinach and artichoke dip, and a cream cheese/pumpkin pie. They had oysters, shrimp, crab legs, crawfish, etc. We were there for about an hour and a half when I hear DD sobbing loudly. I get her from the trampoline (where there are 5 or 6 other kids) and her mouth is bleeding. As I look closer, I notice there is blood coming from above her top 2 teeth. I take her inside and wash out her mouth (and wash and wash etc) and I find that she has a cut across her gums just above those teeth. She has metal marks on her teeth from hitting her mouth on the outer railing of the trampoline. (I found out that the kids were playing tag or duck, duck, goose on the trampoline and she tripped over someone and hit her mouth)

I started to get woozy from seeing the damage and thinking how much it must hurt her. I kept ice on it for a while, until it stopped bleeding profusely, and then gave her some ibuprofen. My MIL was there and DD had mosquito bites on her legs so Grandma decided to take her to her house and give her a bath and let her rest. A comment was made about the possibility of losing her teeth and she was very upset at the thought of not having her teeth.

We checked on her a little while later and she was playing as though nothing had happened. Her mouth looks horrible but I didn't see a reason to take her to the hospital on a holiday. Friday morning I will call a pediatric dentist (she hasn't had her first visit yet) and her pediatrician (may need a tetanus shot). I am praying there is no nerve damage and she's not in terrible pain until it gets better. Her gums are very bruised and her lip is swollen and she also has a blood blister on the inside of her top lip.

ANYWAY ---

I got to eat something after my stomach calmed down. And then... My cousin (who is/was a recovering alcoholic of 2 or 3 months) decided to drink and his wife said it was OKAY. They ended up fighting and my brother and his wife got into an argument because my bro was defending my drunk, idiotic cousin. SIL told them they needed to go home and work out their problems there. They finally left and DH went out to talk to my bro and let him know that you shouldn't let anyone come between you and your spouse - not even family. The rest of it is a long story but we sure got our share of entertainment before coming home and picking up my sleeping little girl. When we got home she was wide awake and feeling good.

Thanks for listening to my woes:)

Oh Patty sorry to hear about your daughter's teeth. How old is she?

Hang in there I think mouth wounds look WAY worse than they are. Sounds like you handled it well with meds and ice.

Thanks everyone! Her mouth is looking so much better and it looks like I will be waiting until Monday to get to the dentist. Hardly anyone is open the day after Thanksgiving - maybe everyone is out shopping except for me:)

We will be staying home on Christmas and having dinner with my MIL. Dad and stepmom will probably stop by for a short visit. When we were kids we always went to my grandma's house right after we opened our presents and we didn't get to play with the good stuff. I have decided that we will always spend our day at home with no commitments to be anywhere.

And I don't invite a lot of people over to my house just because of this kind of behavior. I feel like you should be together and not talk about all the junk that is not your business in the first place. And if someone does talk about it and you don't agree, you don't have to "discuss" it with them. Just let them go on thinking whatever asinine thoughts they have. And I don't like drunks, especially if they are mean.

Patty Glad to hear dd mouth is looking better! We used to do the same thing when I was a kid! Presents then off to grandparents! I vowed not to do that to my kids, and I never did. I figured if anyone wants to see us, they know where we live! Besides, I want to play with the kids toys! ( that's what I bought then for! ) LOL

Oh Patty, I am sorry that you had such an eventful holiday! Your poor DD, mouth injuries are the worst, but always look worse than they are because they bleed so much. My DD has injured her mouth so many times, she has actually knocked out several teeth on different occasions, most of which were not ready tocome out yet. There is not much the dentist can do, she has had spacers a couple of times, and we are looking at braces when she is a little older, but we were probably facing them anyway, lol! I hope you get good news when you go to the dentist! Take care, ARleen

Oh my gosh! Glad to hear that your DD is doing OK and you too! Sounds like you did everything you possible could to make it better and it is true that injuries to the mouth always bleed a whole lot more than anything but the top of the head.

Here is praying that the little one will be alright and the dentist fee reasonable. I am sure that Xmas will be a whole lot better!

Wow Patty, that was a harrowing day! I hope your little one does not have any serious injury to her teeth and glad she is feeling better. Those drinking related scenes can be tough on everybody. I have a dear friend who is a recovering and she has been sober for 15 years. We are all so happy for her and the thing she said was the hardest for people to understand is that alcoholics cannot ever take a drink. Hope your week end will be better. Hugs,

Sabrina :-)

Oh my goodness Patty. Poor baby, and mama too! Glad your daughter didn't break anything. My daughter has broken her arm on a trampoline when she was

6, a boy fell on her arm; and she has also broken her leg on a moonbounce when she was 5, a boy also jumped on her then. Those bouncy things sure can be dangerous. Mouth and head wounds can really bleed, hopefully her teeth won't be too badly damaged. After trauma to the mouth, sometimes they can fall out after a bit, or die and turn grey. I hope she is ok and recovers from her accident.

Sorry you Thanksgiving was not a great one, Patty. It seems the kids always recover quicker than the adults. I hope everything is OK with her teeth when they are checked. Those trampolines can be rough on little bodies. Have a better rest of the weekend.

patty sorry to hear about the little one. sounds like you kept it together and did all the right things for her. probably not much more for the dentisit to do excpet maybe an anitbiotic of some type. hoping for a speedy recovery for her. and for the family issues, that is a tough way to spend any day. hope you can put it behind you and start a new season without that nonsense.

The rest of it is a long story but we sure got our share of entertainment before coming home and picking up my sleeping little girl. When we got home she was wide awake and feeling good.
