Whew! & Font Hunt

Whew! Finally finished the digital album of dad's trip across Canada last year. Ended up being 180 pages (30-40 were scans from a book put out by the train company). It's on his way to him now. :::crossing my fingers it arrives Tuesday on schedule:::

Now, on to the next old trip of his to scrap before he sends me the Russia stuff from May. Last year he joined a group that went to D'lberville, MS to help renovate a home severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Have found some cool "tool" fonts to use, but was also hoping to find one that shows a hurricane with a letter inside (similar to one I used for the Canada album with a maple leave behind each letter [for some titles, not the whole thing - LOL]). I tried googling "hurricane font" but didn't come up with what I was looking for (tho there are a couple with that name). Has anyone seen what I'm looking for (hopefully free) or something similar that would work?

Thanks in advance.

To my surprise, dad called today to let me know it arrived. A day early. Go, DHL!

He loved it (not that I was worried; he's my #1 fan). Given that I sent it to him at a cousin's while he's visiting there, I'm glad they'll have an extra day to look at it. I thought I worked long hours sometimes. Not compared to my cousin! Did a 3-way call with dad & my cousin at 9p Saturday night. He was at her house & she was at the office. Yikes! (No, she doesn't own her own business, as you might think given her long hours & dedication; she does payroll for a newspaper.) And where was she on Sunday, not getting home until after

10p? At the office.

Anyone looking forward to the new Harry Potter movie & book? Harry, Ron & Hermione were in my neighborhood today (on Hollywood Boulevard, putting their hand, foot & wand prints in the cement). I just re- watched movie #4 this weekend & am re-reading book #6. Can't wait, especially for the book.

180 PAGES!!! wow!!! Congratulations. That's fantastic. Isn't it a great feeling to make something for someone who really appreciates it? It's almost like giving away a piece of yourself.

My DD would have been thrilled to catch a glimpse of anyone from the Harry Potter movies. I started on book #1 in June (with working full time it has been difficult to get them read) to try to re-read all of them before the new book comes out. And especially get #5 done before the movie. We're watching the movies in order right now. Can't find #3 - I think middle DD took it home to watch and neglected to bring it back. We can't get time to see the new movie until Sunday. Actually thinking about going to see it at the IMAX.

Wow, 180 pages! That certainly is something to be proud of. Glad to hear it made it to your dad in time for him to show it off, too. It's always a wonderful feeling to give something that you've made to someone who will truly appreciate it.

I wish I could help with the font. I've just begun to look at different fonts online.

Hi Sandy,

Last year was the first time we've taken the time and money to go see a movie at the IMAX. We saw "Night at the Museum" and "The Night Before Christmas." They were both SO good in the IMAX format. I think "Harry Potter" would be wonderful too.

Wow it sounds like you have been busy. I'm glad it got to your dad on time.Isn't it fun to make things for people who really appreciate it?

DD and I are waiting for the HP movie too. I was going to re-read the book before, but it didn't happen.

Thanks! Well, you could say I gave away a piece of myself . . . about

200 hours of my life.

entertainment shows tonight that Emma ("Hermione") was in my part of town, a mile or so from me. Of course, when the 3 of them were on Hollywood Boulevard, they were only about 3 miles from me.

Hope you found it. I was trying to read the book & then watch the movie of it, but didn't have all of them at the time. You really notice how much was left out that way, but it would've taken a 10-12 hour miniseries for each book (I wouldn't have argued ) to get everything in.

I haven't checked to see where it's playing around here yet. Too bad it wasn't released during the school year. I'd have been tempted to take an afternoon off work & watch it w/o all the kids in the theater at the same time.

Got my confirmation from Amazon that the 7th book will be here on the

21st. Can't wait! I wonder what shipping method they're using?

Many thanks. My cousin (who dad's visiting) took it to work with her yesterday at the newspaper where she works. Dad said it was a hit there.

Thanks. If you happen to come across one while you're browsing for one for you, let me know (don't we usually find the best ones when looking for something else? LOL).

I wonder if there's an alt.support.fontaholics newsgroup where I could post & ask? LOL

Too bad we're not closer, Cathy, then maybe we could go together. Enjoy!

A friend of mine has already seen it, but said she might be willing to go a second time. More fun to see with someone, but I'll go alone if I have to (if it comes to that, I'll wait a week or two for the crowds to thin out).

Hi, Dave!

Good to see you around, too. Definitely busy. One trip of dad's down, another 3 or 4 to go. Eeeek!

DHL pulled through this time. Whew! Even the post office managed to pull off a minor miracle this week. My cousin sent me a post card from the east coast on Monday. At some point in its trip across the country, all of the street address was obliterated except the street number, direction & only the first letter of the street name. The post card arrived in 2 days! Amazing.

I'm only that productive when pushed. Have procrastinated for months. Now that the pics from his Russia trip are burned to DVD & may arrive in my mailbox at any time, I decided I'd better get moving & get the Canada album done. I knew he'd enjoy a new audience for it (my cousin has one of my albums, but not sure if she's seen any of the others), so that gave me the incentive to finish it in time to ship it to him there. Without those proverbial kicks in the rear, it probably still wouldn't be done.

Hugs back!

Am trying to keep it a surprise for my uncle (if dad can keep from telling him, now that they're back under the same roof - LOL) so I can send it to him as a belated birthday present. If all goes smoothly (sure didn't for the copy I sent to dad, except that DHL got it there a day earlier than they'd promised), then I might have it there by this weekend. I have lots of pages to print, tho. At the moment they're all on 11x17 pages, 2 up on a page, so I have to reset them to one page per sheet so I can PDF them that way, then convert to jpg to post. Have to do that on my lunch hour, since the program they end up in for the final version I only have at work.

I'll post here when I have at least some of it up. Thanks again.

On Jul 13, 1:48?pm, Kate kindly suggested:

So many fonts out there, so little time to browse even a tenth of them. LOL And if the fontmakers would be a little more helpful in naming them, that would sure help. That one's well named; "wind" gives you an idea of what it will look like. I don't mind if they add their "stamp" to it. There's a line of fonts that start with "KR", many of which I like, & they have something more descriptive in the name after that. Here's one I just saw that's cool called "Still Time"; it has nothing to do with clocks or time so if I was doing a search, I'd wonder why it came up under those words & if I was looking for a font that looked like it does, I'd have no chance of finding it in a search since the title doesn't match the look.

Thanks, Kate.

You're looking for a font that looks tornado-ish, right? I think I remember from the original post. Page 4 of the above link has a font called Swirl, that might work.

Told a co-worker (we're in advertising) yesterday about the hurricane look I was trying to find. He went into PhotoShop & created one using the "twirl" filter. Not exactly what I was picturing, but I liked it. Today, I had a brainstorm & looked at PhotoShop's filters. Sure enough, there's one that achieves the same effect as the "wind" font. I won't be able to edit as easily as I would with a font, but since I plan on using it for titles, it should work OK.

Thanks again for the suggestion, Kate!
