Altering a pair of jeans

Can anyone tell me How to make the waistband, on a pair o jeans larger?

Help!!!

My neighbor, who does alterations professionally, has some method where she takes a section of the underside of the waistband to add an extension and then replaces the fabric she cut out with something else. I only saw her working on this for about 3 minutes, but I was pretty impressed.

I don't think that's the one I meant. She talked about opening the waist band and inserting elastic wedges that she made. I know you can buy the wedge strips but they are expensive. Cea just sewed her own on a long strip of elastic.she put in as many as she need to get the waist to fit better. Juno
