Baste and easestitch

Jun 20, 2007 1 Replies

I 'm sewing a dress and the instructions aren't very easy to understand. In one place it will tell me to easestitch and in another it tells me to baste. If there is a difference, what is it?

Basting, either by hand or machine, temporarily holds something in place before final stitching. Easestitching, along the seamline or just inside the seam allowance, is done by machine. It gathers the slight fullness at the edge of one piece of fabric before it is sewn to another piece, which is shorter.
