Bernina 830

Some one has just asked me the following question any ideas? my brain is a bit slow this week. I would recommend a service obviously I asume from the tone it's not a new machine.

Q I have just acquired a 830 record bernina sewing machine, it seems very noisy and the foot control goes from nothing to leaping into fast action. How do I reduce the noise and make the foot control more gently responsive?

The bernina 830 is a product of the 1970s and has a license to make noise. Not really, but I think it could use a good cleaning and some oil. As far as the foot control is concerned it sounds like it needs replacement. The owner's manual has a detailed description of how to do it. If it acts the same way after you clean and oil the machine, get on eBay and find a replacement or go to a Bernina dealer. Lots of luck, Rollie

Thank you Rollie I have passed that on, I guess it's a second hand rattler, hopefully they will take the advice of getting a good service!!!

Dear Claire,

This would be my advice to the new owner:

  1. Replace foot control - the carbon discs inside are probably too worn to make contact under partial pressure. Mine failed in this way too - it was fine for sinple seams but a real nuisance for anything where I wanted to sew more slowly.
  2. Noisy - check for fluff in the usual places like under the needleplate and around the bobbin area. Fit a new needle - the motor doesn't have to work as hard with a sharp needle.

IF this is a machine that needs oiling:

  1. Lubricate - oil as per the manual in all recommended places. Run with no thread or needle for a few minutes and then oil again. Leave overnight and see if it is quieter in the morning.
  2. Get it serviced by a competent dealer - this is as important as the previous items, but taking in a cared for SM makes a much better impression.

I have passed that on . Thank you for being so comprehensive.

I must admit my first reaction to the enquiry was "go get a good service" but I thought saying that alone sounded rather curt, so hence I posted here as well. You have been very kind I havn't heard from the person as to if it helps but if I do I will pass it on.

Thank you

An 830 is well worth having serviced. A bernina dealer should be able to have things running smooth for your friend. TAria

Check the reputation of the dealer first. Sometimes it's worthwhile to drive an extra distance to go to a dealer with a good reputation, and one that actually takes the cover off the machine and looks inside.
