I hate the length on crop pants. I want to make some "shorts" that come just to the top of my kneecap with about 3" "vents" on the side seams for golf.
I can lengthen my shorts pattern.......
Would I look ridiculously out of style do you think?? My upper legs are wobbly and wrinkly.........ahhhhhhh great to be 65!

I'd personally go for just a shade longer - to the bend of the knee or, better, slightly below. Other than that, go for it. If you're comfortable and confident, and 65, you can wear what you like. Besides, look at some of the truly ghastly get-ups you see entering/ leaving golf courses.
AHA!!! But I don't want to be one of those ghastly get-ups!!!! Your advice seems sound about the length, though..........I better make a quick muslin to check how it looks... Hate making muslins.......
I would wear shorts like that, and I am only 26, so it must be stylish right? Although I might go a bit longer to under the knee for work, otherwise for play I wear regular shorts, never know when I will have to go in the paddling pool with the kiddies!
Let us know how they work out for you!

So, make them out of some cheap chambray or something, and then at the worst you can wear them up for gardening. I wear longish ones - am the wrong shape for teeny-tiny things, and "capri" length trousers drive me nuts.
Re: ghastly - I meant them, not you, you numpty! LOL!
Pat, my upper legs (also 65) are not only wobbly and wrinkly, but also streaked with bad veins. The only place I go with them showing is to the shower and to bed!
And I think I saw something the other day that walking shorts were coming back in style.
I take mine in the swimming pool... If folk don't like my wobbly, slightly wrinkly, varicose veined 48 YO legs, tough! They are welcome to look elsewhere. The legs work - they keep me bum off the floor. That said, I don't do shorts, but I love my stretch capris! :)
Long shorts (knee length or just below) sound fine, and I like AJH's idea of making the muslin out of wearable fabric so they can be gardened or whatever in.
Bermuda shorts are all over the place this year. Like these:

the TV ad for old navy, the shorts all hit them right about the top ofthe kneecap.
I would take the width at the knee into consideration . If you use a pattern that was designed for capri pants, or "clam diggers" as my Mom calls them, it's designed to hit mid-calf or so. Play with folding out the length you want to remove above the knee rather than just cutting them off shorter. They usually flare a little bit as they go down the leg. If you do them a little wider than needed at the knee (now I'm not talking culottes here) that will also buy you more movement room at the knee. The vent will give you some movement room too. So between the two you will be fine.
I'm just concerned that as you move or sit, they will dig into your knee, or ride up a bit and dig into your thigh some. That's never comfortable, and it's my Least favorite thing about shorts that don't fit just so. ;)
Hey! All else fails, we'll get 'em whipped into shape when I get out there. ;)
OTOH, my personal theory (just out of point of interest and not meant to try to say that anybody else should share this theory/belief) is that if unattractive people don't look good exposing whatever body part it is, then nobody should. :)

I think clam diggers are loose and caparis closer to the leg. Clam diggers were originally long panats that were turned up to keep them dry when digging clams. I stated in the thread we had going for awhile on fashion no no's that I didn't like crop pants I think they make legs look like they don't quiet belong coming out of those pant legs. Juno, who has dug many clams in her life and prefers shorts when doing so.
. I am an elderley lurker who, at 87, has turned in her clubs but is
Chris, come out of lurking, we need your input here. It makes me feel good to know that you are still sewing. I didn't get back to sewing until I was 65 and it's nice to know that at 70 I still have lots of years of sewing in me. Give me a goal I'll reach it. I hope to sew until I'm pushing100. My family history tells me I should be able to do that. Juno
I dunno, I work in a swimming pool and I wear them every day - they're practicle! I think they look OK if you've some fat and/or muscle on your calf, but they really don't suit those mega skinny girls!
Who cares what's in fashion or what they look like!!! If you are happy wearing them at whatever length/style, then do it. I have pants of every length from above knee shorts to full length slacks, it depends on the weather as to which ones I wear. At 57 I don't worry about what's in fashion these days.......there are more important things to worry about.
Get out and enjoy your shorts......one person's idea of 'ridiculous' might be totally different for the next person.

Bronwyn, People should wear what's comfortable, it's just that many women wear the crop pants because they are the fashion not because they think they are comfortable or attractive. If they go out of style tomorrow you'll see a lot of crop pants bite the dust. I love long pants, find them uncomfortable on a hot summer's day and wear long shorts then. I may not look great in them but, I'm comfortable. My oldest DD lives in skirts because that's what she's comfortable in, I find them uncomfortable. Comfort should always come first in my opinion.
