Many newsgroup regulars on discussion-only groups refuse to do business with anybody who ignores the newsgroup charter, because they don't come here for advertising, and in fact, advertising on Usenet is generally not good netiquette -- and FWIW Ebay rules prohibit people from advertising on newsgroups as well.

You're preaching to the choir, I'm afraid. The spammers don't read responses, they just hit and run, posting to as many groups as they can in one swell foop.
