Floor!

Went swimming this morning, which was fine. While there was still a heavy frost on the ground when we got to the pool at 9 am, it was starting to go off in the sun by the time we came out... Got home at

12:30, and spent the afternoon helping Alan lay the floor in the new room! Slightly more than three-quarters of it is done! :) It looks dead good, too! 'Cherry' laminate. It's a PITA to lay, mind. However, mostly I had to lay the underlay down and stand on the boards with James, being a weight to stop them moving as the next ones were knocked in. It's looking great! But it had added considerably to the layers of dust in the living room! We had to trim planks to fit, so now there's a layer of sawdust on top of the plaster and other muck... Ho hum! Dyson to the rescue!

While the floor was going down, I was thinking about sewing: tomorrow I'm teaching, so tonight I need to plan the lessons (NOT hard - and I have some from previous classes I can adapt, which is always an excellent cheat! :D ), pack up the fabric and machines, count scissors and equipment and get that packed and ready, and be ready to roll at 12 o'clock tomorrow, so I can set up and be ready by one. I'll have 12 kids to play with, and (I think) about 5 machines... I'll have to get a stack box or two for all the stuff, but we have some unused ones with lids in one of the heaps in the living room.

I'm looking forward to a nice restful afternoon making Christmas stockings with my son's class! It'll be a rest-cure after this!

Oh - I almost forgot! I need to finish off the school banner: just the gold chord and tassels to do, and I've done half of one side...

Hehehehe! I quote Warren Zevon often: I'll sleep when I'm dead!

This has been a long time coming. Once this room is complete, we'll have to think about the living-room makeover: new skirtingboards all round, paint the walls, new curtains, throw for the sofa, and chairs to reupholster...

After that the hall and staircase, then my bedroom!

"And in her spare time, Mistress Kate works for world peace and an end to hunger" Holy moly girl! You put the rest of us, well - me, anyway - to shame! Martha Stewart would be lost in your dust.

I, too, have a new floor in the "guest room" in the basement. Lovely porcelain "color-through" tiles in a tan/beige with a surface that reminds me of slate. It's not flat even, but has "waves" in it. The grout is "mocha" which I figure won't show dirt so fast, and it outlines the tiles nicely. It's starting to look a lot less "finished basement" and more like a room room. I need to get a new futon mattress and bedding, and a small rug for the center of the floor. Oh, a lamp, too, I think. There is a ceiling fixture.

Nothing on the scale of Kate's re-do, but satisfying nontheless.

The dust is worth it if you're happy with the result. Anyway, dust can be cleaned - especially with the trusty Dyson. Keep focused on how things will look when you've finished. At least you're keeping busy and have other things keeping you occupied - BTW what do you do in the afternoons? What's that line - if you want something done ask a busy person - they'll always be able to squeeze in another task.

The banner is done! :) Looks rather good: Royal blue poly/cotton twill trouser fabric with red satin motifs apliqued on. There's the school name, a bumble bee, a badger, a bear, a butterfly, and a beaver (all the class names), gold cord rpound the edge, and three rather splendid gold rassels! Pix will be on the school site soon, no doubt.

This afternoon I'm teaching: I managed to alter and print out the lesson scheme of work and plans for James to take in to his class teacher this morning, complete with properly ucational Aims and Objectives for the course as a whole and for each of the 4 sessions. Each session is abouut two and a half hours. First one today, next one Thursday, then two at the start of next week. I'm taking a break from packing this lot for the classes:

Needles Thread Fabric Paper Trims Pencils Glue Ziplock bags Beads Christmas motifs Scissors 5 sewing machines! Bells! Complete sewing tool kit Lesson plans Iron & ironing pad Extension cable Coffee mug!

I'm about to go and get the fabric out of the loft... Almost everything else is packed.

It must have been a weekend for it. We laid about 600 ft/sq of Wilsonart ( snap together wood laminate) in our main areas: hall, dining, living, kitchen. I am so glad to get the old icky carpet out! What a job tho. Moving all the big furniture around is like a puzzle. All our sawdust in is adjacent shop, getting tracked in on the walk-off mat. My vacuum is getting a work out but at least the sawdust isn't all over the place. Next, we'll do the lower level, which will include the sewing room. We have a major holiday this week here in the states, and my mom is coming in this afternoon. Craziness.

This is just one room of just over 220 sq ft: 22'3" long by 9'11" wide. Quite enough for now, thankyouverymuch! We now have the agony of choosing work surfaces" AKK! Help! Panic!

But I did at least get a nice peaceful afternoon playing with kids and sewing machines! :) We had FIVE up and running, and everyone got to sew a practice bit of stitching.
