vacuums?

my kenmore progressive is on it's way out....and so, need a new one. One that's good for pets (a belgian sheepdog and a golden retriever), kids and living in sandy soil...

i've narrowed it down to two: a sebo and a riccar....any opinions??? and no, dyson is not on the list

Have to say I love my Dyson. It's done 12 years so far, and still going strong, despite 2 cats, a GMNT, pounds of Lego, builders, and regularly feeding it miles of fbriatelli out of the serger!

No opinion on either of those, but I really like my Simplicity S38:

replaced a top-of-the-line Royal canister with a power head. I hated the royal every day I had it, the Simplicity is much better. The dealer threw in a powered above-the-floor tool and it is great for pet hair on the furniture.

We did get a Dyson a few years back. I found the best deal on the web, and they threw in the toy vacuum, which I listed on Craigslist and sold for a tidy sum.

My old Roomba died and I have been without until my older son's recent visit. He decided it would be a good birthday gift, so we went off and bought a 530. My old red one was Carmen the Roomba, but this one is white, so she's Bianca. She talks!!! She handles rug fringe and electric cords, too, and goes to her little base to recharge. I don't rely on her to clean everything, but she's a real trooper when it comes to getting under the bed, which is a California king that requires two men and a boy to lift, and which is too low for a regular vacuum. The truth is, I really like her because she is a robot, doing a job that is not high on my list of what I'd like to do, and although DH supposedly has taken over, his loss of sight makes him even less effective than he was before.

I've never heard of those but I've got my eye on the Dyson Ball and plan on buying it before Christmas. I, too, have found an _excellent_ deal online. Buying a vacuum is a decision you'll have to make on your own. You know what you want it to do and how much you want to spend; base your decision on your needs and budget. What have you got against Dyson?

I am so tempted to put a Roomba on my holiday wish list. Vacuuming is one of my, "I'll do it later/tomorrow/next week" chores, it would be lovely to just hit "go" on a robot. Does yours avoid stairs, or do you have to set up barriers?

Just my $.02. A note first. I spent a little over 10 years in the Vacuum cleaner business, did repairs and sales. That said I /we own an old Hoover convertible upright (sold new in the early

80's $79.00) for the carpeted surfaces and a Filter Queen canister for all the other stuff. Have had these for at least 20 years. They are both easily serviceable and nothing I have ever seen cleans better than either. Kind of the same idea as the Old Singer 400 and 500 series machines. These things were built to last and be repaired. I bet if you can still find an independent vacuum cleaner dealer in your area you can get both reconditioned for not a lot of money.

It senses stairs. It senses a lot of things. It's fun to watch! Check out the video:

I got the less than top-of-the-line model because I didn't need the scheduling feature. I got this one at Target, though my first one, I bought from the irobot.com site.

takes a lot longer than if I were running the big vacuum, but what do I care? I can read alt.sewing while Bianca cleans!

I'm with you, Kate. I haven't had mine as long as you. I've had it for maybe 7 years now...... It's all a blur y'know... Charlie dog and I both have very long hair. DD has medium long hair. Miss Kitty has short hair but she likes to put it here there and everywhere. The boys are.....well they make messes. The Dyson deals with it all quietly and quickly. No complaints at all about it.

Betsey, is price the issue? I know I spent more on the Dyson than I had on any other vacuum previously. But I can now say it has lasted (and stayed in good working order) for almost three times as long as any of the $100-$200 vacuums I'd bought before it. So it has now paid for itself. And it's nice not having to buy extra things to go with it, like bags. Why pay money for something that I'm going to throw away in a little while?

While I agree about disposable bags being an added cost, I usually buy mine when the store has buy-two-get-one-free deal. And new filters are supplied along with the bags.

HP could easily afford to give away printers, they get you on the replacement cartridges. ;-}

It's also good if you have a DH who runs the vacuum, but who never thinks to check the bag, but just says, "Would you take a look at this thing? It isn't picking up." With the Dyson, he can see when it's filling up, and he's mastered the task of taking the container to the trash and pushing the button to open the bottom so the contents fall into the trash bin. What a guy!

OMG!!! That is hysterical. I love the way it senses extra dirt and goes round-and-round. It would probably drive my dogs insane...

Whee! I was also concerned about its ability to transition from rugs to bare floors, and it looks to do that with ease as well. I think Costco is having a deal on one right now, I may have to modify the October the budget.

He did, Beverly. Retired last year, but is still teaching a correspondence class.

I seriously doubt you will regret it. They're worth it for entertainment value (wait'll your dog gets a gander at it!) and it cleans, too!

I knew that (that he taught at the university level), remember I have several of his books, and as I recall each includes a short bio. Or maybe I just learned it here. I was being sarcastic. ;-P

Dang! Costco is having a really good price right now, but they are "Sold Out". I'll keep checking.

I'm not sure I want to budget psychoanalysis for the dog, so if I do get one he'll have to be confined to a different room when it's running.

What???? Beverly sarcastic??? *rapidly fanning myself* Do you know that was a criticism of me at my last (and I do mean last!) job? I was absolutely wonderful, but had a tendency to be sarcastic. *tsk tsk*

Hi Sharon (and all the Dyson lovers out there...)

my reasons for not wanting to run out and buy a dyson.....

all (and i do mean ALL) of the vacuum cleaner repair guys have warned me to stay away from a dyson...

-my kenmore progressive is a bagless and i don't think it helps one bit with allergies...go to empty it and POOF there go the dusties

-i have two long haired dogs, a couple of long haired people, ect....I tried my friends dyson animal out and you know what? it works about as well as my dying kenmore . and hers is fairly new!!

-i really don't want something pacific rim made.

-price is not an issue. well, ok, price is always an issue...but i've budgeted a bit more than the 500- for a dyson.

and again, i think it came down to, i tried a dyson, and it did not impress ME. but that's my opinion . in some ways, i think i've yet to meet the vacuum of my dreams
