Got a real cream puff of a machine for FREE

I have been trying to figure out what type of sewing machine to send my daughter off to college with -- one that is smaller in size, reasonably well-built, and will do the basics. Her current machine evidently is fussy and she doesn't want to take it with her. I have been thinking about getting a Janome Gem Silver because it's small, lightweight, and gets good reviews, but I was not totally happy about it. I asked her if she wanted to take my Featherweight to school, and she really didn't want to take it because she was afraid of using it because it's worth money.

Early this week an acquaintance of mine from my children's school posted a note on the school mailing list that she was getting rid of all sorts of stuff including an "Old Elna sewing machine, works well." So I went to look at it today and came home with an Elna Grasshopper (Supernova?) without the carrying case, with the knee pedal converted to a foot pedal, with all the cams, and with one bobbin which is great because I will know what size to get. It is in great shape and is clean as a whistle.

Now I have to find a soft-sided carrying case for her to keep it in. I'm not going to tell her about it -- just ship it off to her at school after she leaves.

I am just so tickled pink (tickled green? LOL), and I know my daughter will be glad to have a good machine to use at college.

WOOHOOIE!!!!!!!!!!

That is so exciting! And how wonderful that you were able to pass on your love of sewing.

About 3 years ago I got a rolling tapestry bag that is designed for carting sewing machines. It is really nice and has the long handle that is retractable. Possibly she would get a lot of use out of something like that - especially at a college campus where there tends to be a lot of walking! Plus she can leave the machine in there when she isn't using it and it could save her some space. Congrats! You done good!

Congratulations on your find and I think it is a great idea to aurprisse her after she settles in at school. When traveling to my children's homes in the summers, two of them didn't have machines so I carried my Singer in the weekender bag from American Tourister. It is soft-sided, but with a firm bottom. It was easy to carry-on planes and also fit easily in a small space in the car trunk if I were driving. Emily

Is the Grasshopper about the same size as a Genie??? I bought a Scrapbooking case for my genie to cart to garbers guild.

I bought it on sale at Joannes or with a 50% off coupon. That might work for you It is about the same size as the wheeled tapestry bags. I don't know which would be cheeper.

Those are great and you also might want to think about a caboodle spelling??? I put sewing notions thread feet in one of the bigger ones before I moved up to a tackle box when I came across one I liked better.

I pack up and take enough sewing stuff to a friend's house often and this might be great for the dorms.
