Inches to fractions

or should I say fractions to inches. My math is really bad (even worse when a ruler is involved) and I was wondering how many inches is 5/8.

Alot of the remnants at my store here put inches on the tags and therefore when a project calls for a piece under a yard half the time I cant tell by looking at the tag and really dont want to have to sit and place my patterns on the fabric to see if I have a fit (I wouldnt get anything done lol !!)

Thanks in advance !! You guys seem to be a really cool group that gets along well with everyone. Im looking forward to getting to know you here !!

It's not too hard to figure out. A yard if 36". For 5/8 of a yard, divide

8 into 36 = 4. Then multiply 4 x 5 and you arrive at 20". Another simple example would be 1/2 yd. Divide 2 into 36 = 18. Multiply 1 x 2 = 18 inches. 3/4 yard would be: 36 divided by 4 = 8. 8 x 3 = 24inches. Hope that helps!

Thank goodness for calculators. I usually keep in mind that a yard is 36 inches. 5/8 of a yard would be a little more than half a yard (considering

4/8 = 1/2 ). 5/8 is equal to .625. ( I got that by dividing 5 by 8). Multiply that by 36 and you have a total of 22.5 inches. So, if you have a piece of fabric that is 62 inches in length, then 62 divided by 36 would be 2 yards and so on.

Or you could multiply the amount required by the pattern by 36" and get the total inches required. For example, if a skirt pattern called for 1 5/8 yards, then I would divide 5 by 8 and add 1. This equals 1.62 yards. Multiply this by 36 inches and get a total of 58.5 inches.

Does this help at all?

I buy patterns with both inches and centimeters and use the centimeters.

10 millimeters in a centimeter; 10 centimeters in a decimeter (about the width of an adult hand); 10 decimeters in a meter. No fractions - just so many tic mark divisions of 10ths.

5/8? Egad.

Thank you very one for taking the time to answer my "math problem "

I was please to find a remnant piece of fabric that I have had about 8 years now that is exactly 5/8 and is perfect to make my bear with.

Thanks again Tammy
