Managing who can post to this group

These spam messages are so annoying. I see that Google Groups Help explains how to limit who can post to a group. I hope it's okay with everyone if I investigate this further.

Just forget Google access and get yourself a subscription to one of the many connections to USENET. If you want a free one, go to

Then you can use Thunderbird or Outlook for a reader. Google does not control USENET, it is just a web-based reader.

There's nothing you can do, this is a USENET group - it's not moderated and never has been. Google Groups is simply one of the ways you can 'read' the postings, but this group does not belong to GOOGLE.

For more info, go a google search on USENET.

Emily is trying to get signed up now. She has AT&T, and as noted, they're blocking any correspondence with eternal-september, so I recommended to her that she get a Yahoo.com or Gmail email address so that she can complete the registration. Contrary to what they seem to believe, AT&T does not rule the world.

If you want to read usenet news through google groups instead of using a more functional newsreader, you can download a killfile/filter.

have used greasemonkey which works with firefox, though I'm not currently using it and haven't tried the current version. I haven't tried the one for Internet Explorer.

I have my broadband through AT&T, although I keep my aol address and pay a small sum to have it for dial-up in case of emergency, but I also have Firefox, which is a free download through

Once you have Mozilla, it is very easy to get to eternal-september. Actually, I have never used my AT&T addy - I hope they don't write to me on it as I shall never see it.

I think my DSL is on an AT&T line, but I subscribe through a local ISP and have no dealings with AT&T at all. From what I see, it's the AT&T email system that is blocking eternal-september.com from any of their clients. AOL sometimes has blocked individual email addresses and entire domains. I have email through my ISP and keep a Yahoo address active, too. I used to have a hotmail addy, but they killed it when I didn't use it often enough.

I'm grandfathered in to the ability to download my hotmail addresses using Outlook Express. Every time I download e-mail it checks hotmail.com so I am able to maintain the addresses even though I don't post *from* hotmail ever. I use the hotmail addresses to register online where I don't want my comcast address exposed.

Actually it's from both sides. This is from the eternal-september web site:

As AT&T will terminate their Usenet service on July 15, 2009, please note: AT&T mail addresses can not be used for registration with Eternal September as we will not be able to send your registration information to such mail addresses.

Note: This also applies to other domains handled by AT&T mail servers such as Bellsouth, SBCGLOBAL, Prodigy etc. AT&T uses a very "creative" blacklist and is utterly unresponsive to removal requests. Please do not use AT&T mail addresses for registration. The registration page will reject such addresses. Also, please do not send inquiries and questions using AT&T reply addresses as AT&T mail servers will bounce all replies to these mails. Juno

Yes, that says that AT&T has blacklisted eternal-september.com email, so registrations cannot be completed because nobody can respond to email they didn't receive, and verification of accounts requires some kind of response. The work-around is to get a web-based email address to use for these instances.

If you read the eternal-september's site reasonably studiously, they explain why you can't sign up with an AT&T address. I can't remember why any more, but I do remember thinking that their rationale was reasonable.
