My summer 2007 plans

I have just finished making train, plane, and accommodation reservations for a trip to the eastern U.S. from June 17-July 10

2007. I'm taking my older DD, son-in-law and two grandchildren to: Boston, & Dennis Port (Cape Cod) MA; New Haven, CN; New York City; Philadelphia, Ickesburg ;-), Bedford, & Gettysburg, PA; Washington, D.C.; Charlottesville (Monticello), Williamsburg, and Norfolk VA. We will have three days in Boston, five in NYC, and four in D.C. (we'll be in D.C. over Independence Day, good planning, huh?)

My grandson will be a junior in high school next year, so this is probably the last big family trip we can all take together. I doubt very much I'll be doing any fabric shopping, we're going to be trying to hit all the historical/cultural sites we can manage. Yeah, I know, it's a lot to pack into 21 days, but we'll probably never have another opportunity, so....

Wish me luck, we still have a lot to figure out. We're hoping to see at least one play in NY, plus a couple of museums, and the American Girl Store (MUST see for DGD). The internet makes all the planning so much easier! ;-)

Hey, I'll wave to you from the other side of the mountain!!! DH works in C'ville, so it's about 45 minutes from our house.....who knows, might be able to actually get over there and say hello. Must remember that, if I do, I have to keep my mouth shut when the try to pass off the room above Jefferson's bedroom as his closet area......I'm a strong believer in Sally Hemings, and the room is *exactly* as described....only it was described as *her* room, not *his* closet....

Larisa, not going any further because it will only make me angry that we can warp history to fit our image of the people involved

That will be a fantastic trip, and one to remember for many years! Of course, you *must* go to Smithsonian -- as much as you can cram into your brief stay.

The Smithsonian is high on everyone's must-do list. Sadly, the National Museum of American History

be closed for renovation while we're there, but we'll hit most of the rest of the Smithsonian. And, the Capitol Building, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Arlington Cemetery and Tomb of the Unknowns, National Archives, Library of Congress, Mount Vernon, ....all on our list to visit.I wish we had a lot more time, but DGD is entered in the Portland Highland Games on July 21, so we have to get back so she can get ready for that.

Have a wonderful time with the kids, Beverley. Maybe someday you will be able to go back with grownups to see places like the Renwick. (Although, I'm still waiting!)

Olwyn Mary in New Orleans.

Dear Beverly, What a great schedule. Unfortunately I won't be on Cape cod until you are in DC. I wish it weren't so since I would love to be able to work out a time to see you. One of my granddaughters will be graduating from high school just about the time you arrive in Boston. I know you will enjoy the entire trip tremendously.Have a good time visiting our East Coast. Hasn't Sally finally gotten the recognition she deserves? She was certainly Jefferson's common-law wife, and mother of his children, and the matriarch of all their descendents. A fine woman, too, from what I've read.

That sounds very exciting. I love Boston, so much to see there: the Freddom Trail, New England Aquarium... My brother lives there and works as a musician (Classical guitar). And Dennisport: my grandparents lived in Dennis and they used to rent a cottage on the water every summer in Dennisport and have us kids there. I probably wouldn't recognize it now. I know you all will have fun. At the same time, we will be heading out west!

I *am* going with adults: my older daughter, and my son-in-law. ;-) The "kids" are 11 and 17, and looking forward very much to the historical sites, as well as the museums and plays. I know the Smithsonian is a several-days-at-least collection, and we won't be able to see *all* of it, but we'll give it the old college try!

And this entire trip pretty much replicates the one my DH and I took in 1964 (pre-children). We also had three weeks then, and went back for the New York World's Fair. We drove, so we didn't have nearly as much time *there* as my family will have this time, so I'm hoping we get to see some of the things DH and I missed the first time. We never did get to Cape Cod, Monticello, or Williamsburg, and the western parts of Pennsylvania..

That would have been really nice!

Thanks. This is my second trip to the eastern US, but the first time for DD and her family. We are really having fun researching all the places/events/things we want to try to get to.

...Old North Church, The USS Constitution, Bunker Hill, Concord and Lexington, ...

Cool, where? My son-in-law is a music teacher, and grandson plays trombone in the HS Jazz Ensemble.

What a small world! We are staying in a beautiful B&B right on Nantucket Sound.

It's a shame we won't be able to meet you somewhere. We really had to plan this trip around the children's and DSIL's school schedule as well as the Highland Games dance competition.

Oh, you might fit in a visit to the Berklee School of Music in Boston!

I expect it to be *very* fun, and educational, and exciting, and exhausting. I can rest when I'm dead. ;-)

That sounds great - I think I would enjoy that trip too. Do you take travel bookings for others?

Well, the Hemings descendants and Jefferson descendants *do* get together for family reunions, however...in exploring the website for MOnticello, it says that the room above his bed with the round windows was his wardrobe or some such..nothing is mentioned on the website about Sally or their common family members

Sounds like a wonderful trip, Beverly. Enjoy, sounds like you have lots of great plans. One area of the US where I have not been and want to see is New England, which hopefully will get to do in 2008. Emily

I have always wanted to the fall tour of the northeast and Quebec. My in-laws did that one year and have spectacular pictures of the foliage.
