Need Neck line help

I'm make a shirt fir my DGD out of a cotton knit and it looks like the back necline has stretched out of shape. It's muchc larger than the collar or facing. it's a Neu Mode Pattern and doesn't give much in the way of directions. It's a realstruggle to follow the dirctions. It gives bare minimum as to how to put the thing together. Should I ditch the entire project and start over with, another knit and sew stay stiching in the neck line or is there way I can salvage this monster pattern. I was thinking of using a knit with lycra next time. I also know I will never buy another cotton knit from Joann's. It's not very good stuff. Fortunately I had a coupon for 40% off, so it didn't cost me a lot. Juno

Can you dampen the area that's stretched, and then block it back to shape? I think I would trace the neckline from the pattern onto a piece of scrap fabric (woven) with a Pigma pen, or whatever pen you have that you know won't bleed when wet...pin that fabric to the ironing board, then ease and pin the dampened knit to match the drawn line, and let it dry. After that, a line of stay stitching, or a line of basting-length stitches that you could draw up to size, would be helpful.

I know the aggravation of sewing inferior cotton knits, so can sympathize. Some of them can make you want to pull your hair out! When my GKs were little and I made nearly everything they wore and used a LOT of knits, I bought interlock whenever possible because it behaved better. Sometimes you can't find what you need/want in interlock, though.
