OT: Cape Cod

As many of you know my DH and I owned a summer cottage on Cape Cod. We finalized the sale of the house today. We had it for 44 wonderful years and have 44 years of great memories. The idea of selling was difficult for me, I love that little house. We both decided it was no longer in our best interest to keep it. I just turned 80 and Bill will be 80 next week. The care and feeding of 2 homes is becoming a burden mentally and physically.

Although we no longer have a place of our own out there we are not without a place to stay. Our oldest and youngest daughters have second homes there and have already made it very clear they expect us to take advantage of that and use them whenever we choose. And we will!

Many years ago we read an essay in the Boston Globe called "Taking the Dock." It was about closing a summer house for the winter. The last job was to pull in dock and store until spring. We always used that expression when we closed for the winter. On November 7th this year we took in the dock for the last time and today the keys were handed over to someone else. We hope they enjoy the place as much as we did. Juno

Thank you for the hugs.I love getting them. It was a tough decision to make, but once made it was a weight lifted. When we heard from attorney this afternoon that the sale was completed we both had big smiles and knew we did the right thing. Our DD's will not give us peace if we don't make use of their houses. Our youngest has already invited us to spend Christmas on the Cape. If the weather is good we will go. Thanksgiving here in the Hudson Valley may be delayed until Friday though. We expect a foot or more of snow tomorrow and into Thursday Morning.

It's time to kick back and enjoy the beach houses without worrying about the maintenance and upkeep. If you're smiling, you know you did the right thing, and someone else can do the work to keep the house ready. This is one of the big draws of those retirement communities. I'm not sure what I'll do when my plumber and my handyman retire. Never did find an inexpensive electrician, but I think we're OK in that department anyway.

Ah, Juno, Many Hugs to you and your DH! I know it was a hard decision. So from now on, enjoy your DD's homes on the Cape! We have our SC home for the summer and for the winter we have a mobile home in FL, in a Camping Resort-----think Disney's Campground! DH & I are both retired and love our new life. We get a monthly calendar listing all the activities going on each day, as well as the planned bus trips. It takes us a little more than an hour to get to Orlando and Disneyworld, and other major things to see and do in FL. Our FL winter neighbors are from all over the USA and we all look forward to seeing each other. We really enjoy being in FL for the winter! Enjoy your new lifestyle! Barbara in FL

Those are some of our thought's plus the 50 contractor size bags of leaves that have to be hauled to the dump and the taxes and the insurance and higher food prices than home. What I'll miss is the wonderful neighbors and the spur of the moment meals, sitting outside having breakfast and having someone stop over for a cup of coffee with us or the exchange of the morning newspaper. Those things just don;t happen around home. I'll love spending more time with my girls, watching my grandson's surfing, having someone else do the scut work that every home requires. It will be great to have my grandson Ian bake me cake just because, and have Hunter around more to discuss the world of music and theater. We know both sides of second home ownership and as you say it's time for someone else to do the work.

Hi Barbara, I'm sure we won't find it to difficult to adjust to our new life. We are looking forward to having time for some new adventures. Even though I have lived in NYS all my life, there are parts of the state I've not seen. I hope that we will be able to take some trips to different area's starting this spring. I want to spend some time visiting the Thousand Islands, The Finger Lake region and Lake Placid. I have a dear friend who lives in the Rochester area and hope we can get together. The Adirondacks also need more exploring than just Lake George. Bill and I both enjoy area's that are not very developed and NY offers a lot of places like that. Right now the snow is still falling the power is going on and off I'm going to close while I still have a chance to get this sent tonight. Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy the warm of Florida. Juno

I'm sure it was a sad moment for you but you do have your memories and you have children that have homes there and have graciously offered their use to you. By all means take them up on the use of their abodes!!

I think the most difficult part were the negotiations. No one sees a home the way you do. They see the warts, we saw the love, fun and friendships we made. No one can take those from us. We have great children and grandchildren and will continue to make new memories .
