I'm going to make McCall's 9583 vest pattern for my son. He wants a zipper closure instead of buttons. Should I place the zipper on the center front line and eliminate the extra material where the buttons should go? Also, I've never inserted a separating zipper. Do I insert the zipper between the facing and the outer fabric like inserting cording?

Yes to both. When you are pinning/basting the zipper in, check the match of the two halves before doing the final seam. (had my misaligned zipper experience).
