Shipping a machine from UK to US?

There's a beautiful old sewing machine on ebay that I've fallen in love with. The problem is, the seller is in the UK, and when I emailed asking if they knew how much shipping might be to the US, they replied that they were quoted a price of 100 pounds. I think this works out to nearly $200 US, which is waaaaaaay higher than I want to pay for freaking shipping. I tried websites for DHL and FedEx, and neither were helpful... DHL doesn't have anything for pricing that I could find, and the FedEx site makes me fill in a lot of info and then says it's broken and to try again later. :(

Anyone know of a reasonable way to get a machine here to the US without costing an arm and a leg? I don't care about speedy, just cheap.

Sounds about right to me. When my DD (whose DH is stationed over there) sent me some antique linens from my mother's estate, it cost her nearly that much, and she was shipping "domestic rates" from the APO.

Check with Emery or Burlington Air Express. They might be cheaper.

For international shipping, avoid those companies and stick with the post office. The companies add on a brokerage fee and charge to take the shipment through customs.

Royal Mail will probably be the cheapest option (if they carry that weight - if not parcel force) have a look on the website.

If it is an electric machine, have you checked if the electrical format is the same? I got a good deal on an omnistitch machine because the gal was moving to England from the US, and couldn't use it without an electrical conversion.

Thanks for the ideas on shipping. After about a zillion exhaustive google searches, and emailing a few places (none of whom have emailed back), I'm giving up. When I first saw the machine, I knew it would be difficult to find shipping, but I kept hoping... I don't know what it is about this machine, but I thought it was really nifty. Oh, well. :(

BTW, if anyone cares... here's the ebay listing.

There's still two days left, and no one has bid on it yet. I hope the seller finds someone to buy it... I have this vision of the machine getting tossed out with the trash because no one "wants" it. Maybe some kind Brit here will give it a good home? ;-)

Oh so have I fallen in love, especially with some of the beautiful Jones machines. But I did the same thing and was flabbergasted at the cost of shipping. I even inquired about a sewing box that would have cost $100 to ship a $10 item. Unfortunately I only shop in the US now, don't even look at the GBP listings, I want to cry!
