Source for eyelet?

Does anyone have a source for some 17 inch wide eyelet trim? I would prefer cotton but as I haven't been able to find any I would probably be happy to settle for a blend. It could probably be wider but so far the widest I've found is about 6.5 inches. It would be used to make a pinafore for a baby dress for my newest granddaughter who was just 4 months old on Friday.

I had thought to make a little dress from some sort of a dainty little floral print with an eyelet pinafore but haven't found anything yet for either the dress or the pinafore.

I have many other projects to keep me busy but I would really like to make this little one a pretty dress before I get back into my more utilitarian sewing. Or at least to give me something to work on between diaper sewing marathons.

BWAaaaaHaHa. Finally I get to enable you. If you've just got to have 17" wide, probably a plain old Hancock's store will have embroidered eyelet that has one edge embroidered at one ordinarily 'selvedge' edge. Keep the scraps; you'll find a place for them eventually. OTOH, go look at

That's my favorite 'go to' for wonderful fabrics for little girl stitching. I see one there that's on sale but you really must wander around there and see the other exquisite fabrics and findings. And - then there's Martha Pullen's Sew Beautiful online store. Pretty, pretty stuff there too. AND, Wendy Schoen in New Orleans will knock your socks off. Take a look at Wendy's pattern Vintage Baby Bubbles. The pattern sizing and instructions are perfect and the results are exquisite. I'm in to diaper marathon too but sometimes we just have to put the humdrum aside and do something that tickles our hearts. Polly

I was going to suggest Hancock's for eyelet fabric; I bought some light green plaid gingham for the DGD, when she was little and DDIL loved it. I love Martha Pullen's Sew Beautiful; but don't know about the one in New Orleans. As many family members I have in the area, I am surprised none have mentioned her. Thanks for mentioning her, Polly.

100% cotton, 52" wide, double border so you could get half as much and use both sides.

Gulp.

I'd call or write Fabric Depot in Portland, OR (info @ fabricdepot.com) and ask what they might have. Look for eyelet yardage, too... many of the bolts I've seen have had a "border print" of fancier pattern, like:

If that breaks, go to

and put "eyelet" in the search box at the top left. It's all wide enough for what you want. And there is even pink. :)

HTH!!!

Thank you so much for all your help, I knew I could count on my online sewing friends. I really do appreciate all the help I've gotten here over the years thank you thank you thank you.

(and gulp is right, $30.95 a yard is a little over my budget)

After the end of the summer when I go to live with my sister in Las Vegas I will be able to shop at Hancock's and I am really looking forward to that.

Sharon, were you here a few months ago when I was ranting about fabric.com? I doubt that shopping there will be in my near future but OTOH they do have just what I need. Drat!

Thanks Beverly. You're right about the double border going further for the very short width (does that even make sense?) that I need.

I forgot that was you. They're my "go to" source for most everything. I've shopped with them for over 10 years and only ever had 3 problems.

I just got a couple pieces of eyelet from them. One is the piece I got to make a copy of my favorite nightgown. I need to get pictures up of that. It's really gorgeous stuff. It's the "fancy" eyelet they have on that page I sent you.

Homesew.com some eyelets. The widest I saw was only 14" wide though.

Makes perfect sense to me, after all I have made two kilts. An "eight-yard" kilt is made from 4 yards of double wide tartan. The perfectly loomed selvedges are the hem for an adult's kilt.

It's frustrating that Fabric Depot has such a poor web site. I searched there last night, too, and found nothing. Yet I KNOW they have some gorgeous galloon eyelet in the bridal area, as well as one-edged eyelet in cottons. I'm very glad I live close enough to go search there in person. My first stop is usually The Mill End Store, they are closer. They also have a lees-than-wonderful web site.

I shop from them online. Since I've had difficulty walking for the past year, online shopping has been a big help. Hancock's is one of the trusted stores for good service online.

Swiss batiste and other Swiss fabrics are more expensive than others. Emily

I think that's actually pretty typical for brick and mortar fabric stores. And actually, that seems to follow much of the rest of the garment industry -- there seems to be almost an active allergy to a full web presence.

At least Fabric Depot does a good job of answering emails from what I can tell, is usually quite helpful on the phone (and I've seen clerks reading bolt ends into the phone and obviously answering customer questions).

Mill End is technically closer to me, but I never seem to find as much there.
