stay tape

I can't find my stay tape anywhere, it must have disliked the messy room and walked out. Anyway, I have called THWLTOH and Hancock's. The clerks at both stores said they had no idea what I was talking about. It will be next week before I can get there, I know I can order it from Nancy and/or Clotilde, but then have to wait for it. The 6 Y O DGD wants this new dress like yesterday, and I'd like to finish it this week instead of next. Did I read or hear somewhere clear elastic could be used in a pinch for stay tape, or this an old sewist's imagination working overtime? Thanks for your help. Emily

I've seen elastic used in couture gowns as stay tape where appropriate. if it works, use it.

I've also read a recommendation to use clear elastic for stay tape, but haven't tried it.

Until I bought stay tape (are we talking about the sheer kind that looks a little like Seams Great, but without the give?), I used either narrow twill tape or regular rayon seam binding, the kind that people hemmed with before hem lace came out.

A friend of mine saves the selvedge edges from her fabric and uses them for stay tape.

I didn't post because I've never tried it, but I've read that tip too. It mentioned woven fabrics specifically.

Oops, yes, I should have specified woven!

Also, when I said my stay tape looks like Seams Great...it doesn't really, of course, because it isn't cut on the bias like SG. They're just both sheer and on a roll. And I forgot about the fusible interfacing that Juno mentioned, which I found works really well in baby garments of cotton knit...shoulder seams, crotch seams of onsies.

If they've got Seams Great, they've probably got Stay Tape. They're generally in the same section, and the packaging is nearly identical. I went to two TSWLTH and one Hancock's today (looking for a number of things), and they all had Stay Tape.

If the clerks you talked to don't sew, (or don't stock that section) they probably wouldn't have heard of it.

Thanks, everyone! I appreciate the quick responses. I have enough selvedge edges of the same fabric-it's a soft 100% cotton and also fusible interfacing. The reason I mentioned clear elastic was it's in the drawer where I usually keep the stay tape. Yes, Doreen, stay tape does resemble Seams Great. Off to sewing on the precious angel's dress! Emily
