I need to make a grill cover in particular. What kind of fabric should I use that does not weigh a ton but yet is strong, waterproof, and sun resistant?

You can purchase UV resistant polyesters from places like

Polyesters in general are more sun resistant than nylons.
Another option is Sunbrella sun resistant acrylic, but it's too heavy to sew on a home machine.

What a great site! And these people are so helpful too! I'm going to use a Cordura-like polyester for the grill cover. Fun, fun, fun. :)

Depends on the home machine, I guess. We have done a lot of Sunbrella projects on a home machine. Unfortunately, the last one, a large sail cover, killed the machine. Just burned it out.

I made one of clear vinyl, the kind you buy at Hancock's, on which I did minimal sewing - I've used wa paper underneath to keep it from slipping--but mainly I cut it and used some of thoseFrench clips, or whatever you like. This way you see the grill rather than a big black or green vinyl blob. Kept the rain off fine.
P.S That's supposed to be waxed paper, and I use it like a stabilizer - it tears right off.
