Which thread color?

I think the black would show up much better. Especially if you used 2 black threads so the thread would show better on the topstitching. Just my 2c!. Barbara in rainy FL

I typically use the lighter color. If I really wnat it to show up, I'd use a contrasting color. If I really, really don't want it show, I've changed colors to match the fabric.

If I were making it for me, I'd be likely to use red. For someone else, likely black.

Yes, that's what I would have said, too. Make it red, and thicker thread, to highlight the garment. Or make it black, for a less showy, but still spectacular look.

I agree, that sounds spectacular. But not for this particular garment.

No doubling of thread, it'll be double (or triple?) coverstitch for the hem and whatever I select for buttonholes. I am tending toward black. The fabric is this zebra fleece:

My mother's advice was always to go with a slightly darker rather than lighter thread color when matching to a fabric. That was for sewing seams, etc, but I think it also works well for topstitching. I think lighter colored thread would tend to look faded. However, white (or red) topstitching on black work very well in some cases for instance:
