Cheap/free QUIET dust exhaust from garage

Doing grinding and sanding of plaster etc. - on a table next to the wall in a garage.

Took an old window AC unit and removed the coil and everything except the fan that sucks air in from the end - opposite end has the motor. The fan has a square exhaust slot on top. Connected this to a trash plastic bag with a bungi cord. The other end is fastened to a 5 gal paint can (remove bottom) also with a bungi cord - through the wall with a piece of screen nailed flat on the stucco - to keep rodents out. No need for a hood if you slant the bucket toward the exterior for drainage.

The result is a reasonable quiet - two speed - exhaust fan that does an adequate job of removing any dust within about three feet of the 6" dia fan opening - which I extend with a short piece of duct.

Probably the wrong time of year but when it's warm, open a window or door on the opposite side of the room. This will cause all the air in the room to be vented - might not notice a lot of movement from far away, but it'll keep the dust down in the rest of the shop. Just leave it running for an hour or so after you finish working in there...

I notice the dust - or lack of now - on my 6 month old car. I see the dust outside on the ground - far better result than anticipated from something on the way to trash!
