Finish for pepper/salt mills ??

I am trying to figure out what to use on a pepper and salt grinders. I worry about the salt doing things to the finish inside, or do you finish the inside?? I've had the mechanism for 4 years and just got around to turning it.

I wouldn't finish the inside of the mill. I finished the outside of a cherry peppermill with Deft from a spray can. It looks nice but has chipped in a few places. I might try an oil or wax finish next time to get away from the chipping.

I agree with Barry Turner on not finishing the inside. Afraid it might contaminate or change taste of contents. Outside, I use thinned varnish, two or three coats, because these things are handled so much. No chipping problems, maybe because the varnish is thinned enough to soak in.

I do not apply finish to the inside. I apply Urethane Oil Finish to the outside. It is a hard, durable finish that happens to be food safe. It is available at Woodcraft and/or Craft Supplies.
