Anyone have experience changing the a flat pulley to a v- belt on a n old lathe. I have an American Woodworking Machinery lathe (predecessor to Yates American) and would like to consider this modification.

People do it. My belting supplier, who are perhaps slightly biased, but also don't get enough business from me to care that much about my business, claim that the increased belt tension is likely to kill the bearings (and that they have seen this happen), so they suggest sticking with leather belts. DWYL.
