I tried for a while to get a high gloss pen finish with no luck. I know not everyone wants high gloss but for some of my pens I really like it. I tried CA, CA with BLO, Hut brown/white bars and Hut Perfect Pen Polish. Nothing was very glossy or very long lasting. Then I found a link to a method using polyurethane which I posted below. I use a simpler method than he describes. I simply get the wood smooth finishing with 600 grit. Then I apply poly with a blue shop towel rotating the lathe by hand. I sand with
1500 between each coat and give six coats. The last coat is final and I don't do anything else to it. Look and durability is beautiful. It takes some time and that is why PPP and other stuff evolved I'm sure because we want instant results. But I've proved to myself that there is no shortcut to high gloss.
