Greame Priddle Type Wood Vaporizer Power Source

You've probably seen a Graeme Priddle piece that has some pyrography / wood burning on it. If you've seen him actually do it you know it's not pyrography - but more like Wood Vaporization - a flash of light, a puff of smoke - repeat - carefully. And he ain't using no itty bitty 1 or 2 amp power source - oh no no no. Think "10 AMP battery charger" - with a little internal reworking.

And if you've seen him demo his not so little beastie you go home thinking "I'm gonna make one of them things!" - visions of vaporizing wood dancing in your head. Then you go home and try to remember all the details he mentioned - and try and figure out how to fill in the stuff he overlooked mentioning. Then the idea get's put on the "Someday I'm Gonna" list.

Well Someday may come a little sooner with the help of Phil Royal's helpful how to in the 07-2008 Silicon Valley Woodturner's newsletter.

a much easier way to do this is to pick up one of the microscope light power supplies that I keep stumbling across - maybe others find them too - they seem to sell for $10 to $20 and are all set up to do this. pretty much any variable voltage source that will give you 1 to 6 volts (ac or dc) will do - no need to buy a battery charger and modify it

I checked e-bay and the least expensive unit I found was about $75. Got another source?

Thanks to the help of John K. Jordan and Steve Antonucci, I've put up a web page on Silicon Valley Woodturners site with a lot more and more detailed info about building a DIY Graeme Priddle Style Wood Vaporizer System based on a very basic car battery charger.

(all one line so watch the line wrap)

one suggestion for those of you in Silicon Valley - go to Weird Stuff Warehouse and buy yourself an adjustable voltage 5V max power supply - someting with 5 amps or so of current will do, more is OK - make sure it can adust down to 1.5 or so volts and use that - it will be better in all respects than something made from a battery charger and it will cost you less too unless prices at Weird Stuff have gone up dramatically since I was last there.
