Newbie Alert!

My first set was $32 for 8 chisels. It's not the tool, it's the user

- how you sharpen and use the tool.

My personal recommendations: Rowley's book "Woodturning: A Foundation Course", and Richard Raffan's intro book/video combination (don't have the title handy).

'Turning Wood' - what were the odds

Howdy All,

I thought I'd warn you that I've just found this newsgroup and expect to pester and pain with hundreds and hundreds of questions about turning!

I have a Central Machine (aka Harbor Frieght) 14 x 40 lathe and a handful of cheap (no, not inexpensive, I mean cheap) chisels. The first and primary question I have would be a request for any good beginners books. I've been an avid wood worker for nearly a decade but turning is a new twist -- pun intended!

Thanks Tony

Yeah, but with ten zillion beginner woodturning books, the odds of there being 3-4 variants of the name are pretty good too. Raffan has a big handful of books in that category himself.

I probably should have just looked it up on Amazon.

Tony You might find a helpful beginner tip or two on my web site.

Thanks for the leads folks. I'll run those titles through my library.

I started with that and was inundated with titles, hence my request from more experienced turners.

I live in the Ithaca, NY. Anyone running any classes up here in the North East? I've seen a few advertised at local shops but they were more of an advertisement for a particular make/model than teaching techniques and methods.

Adios!

Chuck didst purge the darkness of ignorance in shining his brilliance of knowledge upon the lowly newbie:

Dude! That's like totally awesome. They're meeting is only an hour and a half away and coming up Tuesday! Thanks!
