Hi Herm, good to read your mature and helpful commentary on rcw again. Please ornament this ng much more often. I realize your problem, but it's always best to ask a busy person, etc.

This isn't intended as a critique of WoW, just my own perception. I do believe that WoW is a great asset for woodturners to enjoy and learn about the art/craft. You gave us all a gift with your concept plus your follow through to effect the thought. No doubt that I underutilize the narrative parts, but for my purposes pictures are the essence of WoW.

I find that study of pictures or better actual turnings, regardless of whether I count them very good or very bad, are of as much help to me as someone's praise or suggestions for improving my work. I rarely read WoW's "share your thoughts about this photo" sections. I might have a different take if I posted pictures, but for me the chatty, predictable comments neither instruct nor entertain. I find the rcw ng format best for real 'give & take' discussion. This thread is an example.

Herm, different ballparks, different ball games. Many thanks for WoW. Yep, I think the pictures are the thing.... but tomorrow I'll probably take a different position and nobody will notice or care. 'Sic transit critique' :) All best, Arch

Attaboy Dan. I have to agree with you Dan. It appears that the expected critique is to praise the work to no end. I for one want to improve my work to the point that makes it very desirable to the BUYING public. The only way I can do this is get some valuble advice from fellow turners, and it does not have to be from the gurus in the field only. I would appreciate the views of well accomplished turners, hobby turners, novice turners and also non turners who are interested in purchasing turned items.

That is not to say that I will take everybody's advice but I will certinally read and use what I feel will help me in reaching My goals in turning.

A harsh critique may hurt upon initial reading, but once over the hurt one can reread the critique and take it for what it is intended - an offer to help.

Dan Boll> Joe, Everything you say is clear, reasonable, do-able, and valuable. Good

I think you're missing the point, Ralph. You're operating on the assumption that the album section of WoW is a de facto critique area and that any and all pictures posted there are fair game for whatever criticisms anyone cares to throw at them.

I would hazard a guess that probably the majority of people who post their pictures on WoW are not "professional" turners and have no more than a passing interest in selling their work. I could be wrong, but my read over the past couple of years has been that most people who post there are hobby turners, or, at best, casual sellers. While there is no doubt that we all want to learn to do better work, there _is_ some question as to whether Charlotte Chatterwork wants her work picked apart by Bob Burl, just because she had the temerity to post one of her pictures on the album site.

Or, it can drive away a new, novice, timid or thin-skinned turner who only wanted to show their work to someone, not have all and sundry tell them that it would make a good piece of kindling.

What "works" for you may not necessarily be the ideal solution for everybody.

Chuck, I'm sorry if you got the wrong impression from my previous posting. I think that WOW is the best thing that has happened for turners to show their work and view the work of others. I have been a member from when it first started and continually look forward to checking the site out daily for any new work and/or discussions. I have gained alot of insite into woodturning from WOW and probably will for a long time to come.

I have always considered WOW to be a place for ALL turners(regardless of skill level)to show their work. However, the opertunity for constructive criticism should be available for those that request it. This topic is being discussed on WOW right now and one proposal is to set up a section for turners requesting CONSTRUCTIVE comments on their work. Hopefully this will come about.

I am not a "professional turner" by any stretch of the imagination and may never be one, but I enjoy turning and also enjoy selling my work and deffinately want to improve my skills to do this or I'm going to run out of space to keep my "works of art"(TIC).

Well, clearly I did get the wrong impression. I'm all for constructive criticism when it's requested, (and I can even stand it when it isn't, personally), I thought you were casting a vote in favor of everybody's work being subject to scrutiny.

And I've already cast my vote in the WoW poll in favor of a critique area/procedure.

Andrew; I find it quite difficult to offer a critique of a picture(two dimensional) of any turning(three dimensional) without some form of standardized method of photography or presentation. Assistance with form or technique is extremely difficult without "in hand" inspection, at least for me it is difficult. However, the idea is interesting and could be very valuable to beginners and accomplished turners alike.
