Glaser Packard house-brand-tools
P&N seems to have a long-time loyal following from down-under. (Now available in the US.)
Within the manufacturer offerings you will find a variety of steels. Cheapest carbon, second High Speed (e.g. M2), more expensive powdered process as well.
I've got some sort of tool by each of the manufacturers, and in powdered, for a couple of gouges. I'd buy what I needed at the best current price from any of them.
Oh yes, some are house-branded to other places, though alloy to alloy, no problem.
Crown 3/4" roughing gouge - very pleased Crown Spindle Gouge - not as pleased (bought from eBay and I think it is HSS at best)
Have two Hamlet (mid range ones from Craft Supplies) - 1/2 bowl gouge and 3/4 scraper - very pleased
Cheapo set of HSS from Harbor Freight - Pleased, as who cares if my grinding lessons mess up!
