QUESTION re grain tearing

Yes, you hit the nail on the head, you need to sharpen your tools. "Fairly Sharp" isn't good enough. And you have to sharpen often. It sounds like you are new and don't have a sharpening system yet - a grinder should be your next purchase, but don't think of it as a grinder when you have your gouges near it, think of it as a sharpener, just touching up the cutting edge.

Hi Keith

The best advice I can give you, without duplicating a lot that has already been said, and probably better than I could do in a short write-up is, go to Darrell Feltmate's site and take your time exploring and reading and looking over his no-nonsense advice, (he's not selling his tools or jigs or etc.) and has done a lot of work to give new as well as not so new turners, new ideas and proven ways of making tools and how to use them (low cost or downright next to nothing cost, home made tools and jigs that work).
