Virginia Sawyer.....

Good afternoon folks,

I was the lucky recipient of a dastardly deed and hope to capitalize on it.

Last week, somebody dumped the remains of a LARGE maple tree in the parking lot of our church. It was obviously done by a landscape or tree removal company that didn't want to pay the county for dumping it. So to solve that problem, they dumped it where a non-profit church would have to pay for the removal. Aargh.

Now for the good part. The lower part of the trunk of this tree is 36" in diameter while a little higher up there is evidence of quilting and birdseye. Oh yeah, and the church says I can have all I can use since they wont have to pay as much to have it hauled.

With this in mind, I need to locate a portable sawmill in Northern Va and am having a tough time trying to find one. The closest I can find is in Maryland and is over 50 miles away.

There are none listed in the phonebook that I have.

Anyone?

Thanks.

Bob, have you called Woodmizer, 1.800.553.0182, to see who they have in the area? Dave in Fairfax

Dave, I had already called woodmizer and they gave me the names of three owners in MD. Unfortunately none of them have bothered to return any calls. Oh well, I guess it is going to all become turning blanks!

Dave, and anyone else in the Northern Va area, please drop me a line if you are interested in any Maple.

Sorry that didn't work out for you. I'd love to get my hands on some more maple, but my wife would put my head on a stick. I turned 7 bowls and some belaying pins and she can't see a dent in my hoard, er supply. Thanks for the offer though. Any idea yet who dumped it? Dave in Fairfax

Nope, no clue...I am not holding my breath for someone to come and claim responsibility.

Sort of. A Navy Buddy of mine knows a couple of Gunneys who are going "inactive" and wanted some replicas of the belaying pins on the Constitution to put into a framed case with Bosun's Pipe and other goodies. He wanted them out of Cocobolo, so I figured that I'd practice on maple rather than burn up expensive wood, especially since he didn't really know what he wanted them to look like. I made 4 basic shapes, had him choose a shaft and head shape he liked, remade them with different beading and had him choose from those, then made some with different finishes in different woods in the hsape that he wanted so that he could see how it would look in different colors. Then we made htem from the Cocobolo with the changes he decided on after seeing the last bunch. Then I helped him turn one of his own from Zebrawood. The Zebrawood reminded me a lot of Oak. Is it just me or has anybody else noticed a similar smell and type shaving?
