Woodturning in Switzerland?

Jul 01, 2004 2 Replies

I was just checking the log files of some woodturning websites today and they've been getting quite a few hits from Switzerland lately. Is there a big woodturning community there?

There was the normal percentages of Canadian, British, Australian, etc. but Switzerland really made a jump since the last time I looked.

We had a Marco Barrera, a Swiss turner from Canada to the Northwest Washington Woodturners meeting. He showed pictures of an event in a Swiss town with 300 turners. They work in industry together making tourist items. He took a patternmaking apprenticeship in Switzerland and actually didn't learn to cut, vs. scrape until many years later. Check out his pictures from WOW. You wouldn't believe how many fixtures he had to make to create the Saturn shown there.

Hmmm interesting. Sounds very similar to the woodturning in most of the eastern block countries. Wasn't there a lady who demonstrated recently at the AAW symposium that was from Switzerland? Maybe it was Finland though.

Thanks for the info, Derek.
