A question about a Knitpicks shawl

I just received my supplies to knit this shawl from Knitpicks

to the pattern, this is done in garter stitch. I think I'drather use a stocking stitch. My question, is there anything I need tobe aware of before just purling all of the WS rows instead of knittingthem according to the instructions? Will that affect the finished product in some, unforeseen by me, way? Betty, I unvent a lot of shawls that call for garter, and all I can suggest is doing a swatch... garter is 'squarer', stockinette is 'longer'... for lack of a better descrip. Noreen PS, most faroese style call for garter, but I like stockinette better, and adjust accordingly, if that helps you 'any'.

Thanks Noreen.

This is my first big project using lace weight yarn, so I'm hesitant to try to alter things very much until I know more how well the yarn and I work together :) Maybe I will stick to the pattern for this one. After that I should be able to see more clearly what kind of adjustments to make.

You saved me from potentially really messing it up!

As others have said, the gauge will be different most noticeably in the vertical direction. Keep in mind that stockinette stitch fabric.has an annoying tendency to curl at the edges.

Thanks for all of the responses. I had that fact somewhere in my brain, but it just didn't surface when I needed it too. The joys of maturing - lol.

Does anyone know why these types of shawls would mostly be designed with a garter stitch?
