Afghan is DONE !!!

In Sept. 2004 DD#1 asked me to make her an afghan. We went to pick out the yarn and when she chose beige, I tried to get her interested in some bright, happy colors, but no, it was beige.

Since I was stuck with this boring color, I chose a sampler afghan to make it more interesting. There were 63 different squares to be made, and I started with #1, 2, 3, 4 and then that got boring so I switched around to any square that looked interesting.

Then I found that some of the squares came out awful, some I couldn't get the directions straight - so I decided that when I found a square that I liked doing and had good results with, that I would made several of them. That worked out real well.

I ended up only doing 26 of the 63 squares,a few of each, but there are enough so that it looks like a sampler.

Then came the assembling part - that took me forever - I'd put it away and forget about it. I love bright colors, and I just hated working on this awful boring color.

But on Sunday I finally finished the danged thing !!! I called DD and told her it was done, and she drove right down. She was so happy with it - I felt bad that it had taken me almost 14 months to do it.

Now I can start on bright gypsy-colored things !!!!

Thanks Mirjam - yes, I love bright colors. My two daughters are the exact opposite - blacks, browns, tans for clothes, plain gold or silver jewelry - no color at all. They must take after their father.

I found a yarn that I just love - it's Red Heart's Bikini , 4 ply worsted - it's a variegated yarn with pink, orange, purple, turquoise, yellow - all the colors that I adore. I have used it to crochet a vest, a scarf, an afghan turned into a table cover, and a poncho for my littlest grand daughter.

Also, I usually make at least one square from the Bikini for the 6x6 exchange. Maybe I'll make a granny square dog sweater for Dusty now that I can work on things again - I wouldn't let myself start anything until I finished that danged afghan.

So I think you can see why working on this beige afghan was just torture for me.

I hope all is well for you over there - nice talking to you,

Rusty

Hi Rusty,

Congratulations on finishing it and I do agree with you, one color no matter how many different pattern stitches is so boring. Now you know my middle name is variegated. LOL

Rusty, I share your feelings about WORKING with beige on a whole, big afghan! And you solved "the task" exactly as I would have done , cutting out some patterns, making more of another one!

BUT when the afghan was READY... I am sure it was stylish in beige!!! So I am sure your daughter was VERY happy! Congratulations!!! AUD ;-)

That sounds like one of the Paton's Melody colours. I am doing a sweater for Jesika in it now - just beautiful!

Aud, actually the beige was a good color choice for the afghan, as it will look spiffy wherever they put it. It won't clash with anything, will look just as good against a plaid as it will on a floral print.

Yes, my daughter was thrilled with it - that alone made it all worth while.

Nora, thanks for the congratulations, and I definitely agree that variegated is the way to go.

Katherine, the yarn was Mainstays Soft Beige, acrylic, from WalMart. The afghan, when finished, was really nice, it was just the getting there that was so hard. LOL

Congrats on your finished big project. It is hard to stay with something when it's boring, but I'm sure the finished result was beautiful. And the happiness of your daughter made it all worth while. Marie and the cats

Rusty I can agree that that would be boring - I recently finished a jumper for a friend in bone and it bored me silly - so much so that when I got the yarn for DD#2 's Christmas present I chose red !! God Bless Gwen

Hard and boring, I would think! But it sounds as though you feel it was worth it, and that is a good thing.

I have started working on the Shawl of Many Colors again - I did it in the spring, but I increased too much & too often, and it had wings, it was waaaaay too wide. Also, it had some of that flammable recalled Bernat yarn in it, so I cut that yarn out, and crocheted the two sides of the space it left, back together. After all that, I still couldn't see how I'd use it with these wings, even tried tying knots in them. I frogged half of it, the bottom half up to where the Bernat yarn had been, and now I've started crocheting it back together.

It is the brightest shawl I've ever seen, and I just love working on it. I do a row or two, or three, of each color, whatever feels right. What a difference it is after the beige afghan. So I'm working with my colors again, and I am happy !!!

Rusty, I missed your original post, but have gleaned that you finished a 'boring' beige afghan and are now 'treating' yourself to a many coloured project. GOOD for YOU, and congrats on finishing the 'boring' project! Hugs, Noreen

Although I agree that plain beige would be boring to work on..... it could have been worse. What if she had asked for black or navy blue... that would have been murder on the eyes. ;o)

Noreen, thanks for the congratulations - yes, I'm on to a more colorful life now.

Gemini, that's a good point - if it had been navy, rather than beige, I would have needed bright lights to work on it, or sit in front of a window. If it was black, I'd probably still be making the squares, sitting in front of the window with a bright light on. LOL

Thanks Carol - you're right - seeing how happy my DD was when she saw the afghan made all the work worthwhile.
