air travel and knitting

I haven't been reading the newsgroups lately so forgive me if this topic has been covered recently.

I'm planning a trip via air (my first since 9/11). Any tips on traveling with knitting?

Go to the FAA website and print the page stating what may and may not be taken on board. Final decision is, of course, up to the apes at the security checkpoints, but it helps to go prepared. Take plastic or otherwise disposable needles in your carry-on WIP. Blunt-nosed (ie, kindergarten) scissors.

Whatever you do, ignore the folks on other lists who tell you to take a SASE so you can "mail your needles from the airport". When is the last time you saw a USPS mailbox in an airport?

Reply to the list as I do not publish an email address to USENET. This practice has cut my spam by more than 95%. Of course, I did have to abandon a perfectly good email account...

Many airlines list forbidden articles on their websites. Lately I have had no problems recently carrying knitting needles but scissors are a no-no. I tend to try to use circulars because they don't pose the problems knitting in confined spaces and don't end up getting away and rolling under seats etc. That is in domestic flights - haven't tried internationally lately.

The TSA, which is responsible for security, has a list of permitted and prohibited items on it's Web site.

has a linkto the pdf file but I can't get it to load this morning. When I looked atit recently, knitting and crochet needles and blunt end scissors were on thepermitted list. I don't know that you can absolutely count on the agentsalways following the rules so I avoid putting anything in my carry-on that Iwould hate to lose.

I checked the TSA list and knitting and crochet needles are okay to carry on board, I asked this same question last month and someone referred me to that page.

I was the one who suggested the TSA website. I also suggested printing out a copy of the list to carry with you just in case one of the inspectors decides you can't take knitting/crocheting needles or blunt end scissors. Of course, since I was prepared everything was fine.

I thought scissors were not allow on the planes. I do know that nail files is not allow so you will have to break the nail files off of your nail clippers. My brother took an nail file clippers with him and they told him that.

Hi Pam! Not all, but most airlines are allowing BLUNT scissors. (children's scissors) Yes, I've heard nail clippers withOUT a file are ok, too. Also, I know the Clover thread cutter and yarn cutter pendant's are OK too. Noreen

Gee, I just got back to NC from a trip to Denver, and I didn't even think about my little make-up bag in my purse that is always there. It has a clippers with little file, and also a regular nail file! Lucky me, it presented no problems (though an ancient nail file would have been no great loss if they had taken it). I had a thick book to read for my bookclub meeting coming up, so I didn't bring knitting this time. Cheers, Kira

Did you all watch Blue collar special on The Comedy channel? They did a joke about how airlines won't allow leaf blowers on planes. I laugh at that one. I had to tell you this b/c it was right after I finished typing the about nail file ban on planes when I heard it on television. Pam-Doggirl3
