Allergic to wool

because PETA discovered that the fur trim on some jackets that were imported from China were dogskin. since Americans just can't seem to separate their feelings over their little Fifi & some dog bred halfway around the world as a food/fur animal, there was a huge outcry (something PETA is good at causing). the upshot was a law passed in Congress outlawing the use of any part of domestic animal (except rabbit) for any type of clothing item. it was *meant* to ban the dog fur coat trim, but it also made spinning cat & dog hair yarn illegal, because, like most things pushed by PETA & their front, the Humane Society of the United States (which is not in any way affiliated with the American Humane Society, the real humane society), it's half-baked. yes, i detest PETA & the HSUS. it really bothers me that the HSUS gets donations under false pretenses by making people think they are the AHS. PETA kills animals. they are evil nasty greedy people. lee

hmm.. i'm going to have to go to the yarn shop (groan) and touch some alpaca to see if it does bad things to me.

too true :D

i'm in canada, near montreal, although i don't know about legality... i don't think i'm terribly interested.

i could spin up some of what my dog sheds... eww.

don't worry, i'll check, i spend my life checking fiber content :D

if the llama is touchable, i'll watch for with the silk :)

cool :D thanks so much for all the info!

yeah, we had it in a huge field around where i grew up, it argued with the raspberries for dominance. then they built houses in the field, and there went the milkweed and the gigantic buckets of raspberries :- (

since then i've never seen any. plenty of ragweed and burdock though..

cheers, L.

sorry... ;) just make sure it's 100% alpaca or alpaca/silk. there are quite a few blends with merino (wool). the alpaca/silk blends make great shawls, but i'm not sure if the silk adds enough anti-sag for a sweater. i'll have to try that one of these days (after i finish my beadwork, paint the kid's room, finish the neverending sock, etc)

oh? i'm about 3 hours south of you then :)

you could... i might try spinning my Malamute this spring. he sheds enough to cover the entire town!

Before spinning it, try washing some of it, letting it dry, then wetting it again without soap, to check for the smell. Some dog hair apparently doesn't smell bad, but some really smells horrible when wet. If you can't make it smell nice, don't bother spinning it!

Chuckle. We had one when I was growing up. We would cover the pine trees with his fur as we brushed it out. They would look all snow covered when we done, and within hours it was is if it never happened. I wonder if the birds missed him as much as we did when he passed away.

well, i'd wash him first, before brushing him out :) actually, he doesn't stink, but my Great Pyranees/Border Collie cross (Kirby) does! of course that's the dog that spends more time indoors ;) we shaved Kirby last summer & he was so much happier. just shaving him took almost 20 pounds off his weight. lee -- Question with boldness even the existence of god; because if there be one, he must more approve the homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear. - Thomas Jefferson

Hey, just today I noticed a review at Powellsbooks.com of a book called "No Sheep for You: Knit Happy with Cotton, Silk, Linen, Hemp, Bamboo & Other Delights" by Amy R. Singer

Apparently Amy Singer is one of the founders of Knitty.com. You might want to look for the book.
