Another lovely Sunday

Good morning - afternoon or whatever everyone, it is just *the* most beautiful autumn day here - sunshine , birds chirping, and just 24c so all is well with the world

Actually the whole of Australia ,and I suspect other countries as well ,as it must have made the news is very anxious over the fate of two miners who have now entered their thirteenth day trapped 1kilometre underground. There were three but one unfortunately died and they found him very early in the search

The two left are trapped in a cage - which perhaps helped save them. Apparently they are still in reasonably good spirits and a couple of days ago they were able to pass food and vitamin supplements to them and even some papers to keep them occupied, so we are all praying that the last few metres they have to drill will go well - apparently they still have about 7 metres to drill to get to them. This was all triggered by an earth tremor and so they are afraid to hasten with the drilling in case of setting off another.

I have no real plans for the day except to just enjoy this fabulous time of year when the weather is always perfect.

Hope you all have a wonderful day - and for those in the far north I hope that the snow is far gone God Bless Gwen

Oh Gwen, I do hope they get to those miners soon, and without further cave-ins. It would take a braver person than me to go that far underground. I don't even like driving through tunnels.

It's a "fresh" spring morning here - windy and rainy, though the sun is supposed to come out later on. I plan to go to the nursery and have a look around. I also hope to finish knitting a bag that I plan to full - my first attempt at this. And then there's the newly painted basement room that needs to be refurnished and reorganised. Who said Sunday was a day of rest???

Eimear, happily puttering about.

I hadn't heard that story, Gwen. When will they be able to rescue the miners?

Katherine hopefully they may get to them today or tomorrow - thay had hoped to get to them on Saturday but they discovered 4 metres of what they call

*hard rock* ( I thought all rock was hard) this rock is much harder than concrete and since they can only use hand held drills ( weighing 445 K and they are holding them kneeling down in tunnel they have made) it is very hard going.

I cannot imagine how the rescurers are able to hold that heavy drill in a tiny tunnel and on their knees. They are afraid to use explosives for fear of triggering another earth quake ( the tremor that caused the problem was

1.2 on the scale). Yesterday they decided to try a new explosive about the size of a pen which is not very powerful but should help and it does not give off any blast effect to surrounding rock.

The rescurers were doing 6 hour shifts but that became impossible very soon and miners from all over Australia are there to help. To get to where they are ,they had to build a horozintal tunnel 27 metres long and still have almost 4 to go and then have to go vertical for another 3 or 4 to reach the men.

To add to the trauma one of our best known television reporters - especially known for years on 60 minutes - but also covered all world tragedies and wars - callapsed after giving what was his final interview, and , despite immediate attempts at resusitation died on the way to hospital.

So that was Sunday in Australia. God Bless Gwen

I absolutely *hate* underground mining! I could never do it, and would never want to be connected to it. It is just about the scariest thing to do. Deep-sea diving is a close second!

Higs, Kather> Katherine, they are still trying, (this being Mon morn) they have

Katherine you will be pleased to know that the men came up at 5 am this morning and walked out as though nothing had happened. They were certainly tough and fit men but they way they got through it is amazing. The celebration in Beconsfield Tasmania is still raging and I figure it will for a considerable time. God Bless Gwen
