I haven't made the vest of many stitches....but that's the reason i bought the book...and i will make it!!! i'm off to scotland ireland and england on tuesday, to look for yarn!!!!!! let me know if you start it!!! Maggie, madly knitting in the sonoran desert

Maggie, Also should have added that I am doing my vest of many stitches in Silkroad DK tweed by Jo sharp from Italy ( 85%wool, 10%silk,5% cashmere) (12 wpi, 5.5/"on size 6) I have gauged it and ready to go when I get my hubby's vest done of Black Water Abbey yarn. The book is fabulous but don't live where it gets cold for long here so a vest is perfect. Virginia gets cold but not for months and months. My hubby is after me to make him the Wall Street Cables vest as well . I really like the refined Aran vest too. Isn't the Viking Turid sophisticated? I am 100% Swedish and really like that one too. Really not a bad one in the entire book. I only found one correction for the whole book on their website. Well done once again Knitters Universe! barbie

Barbie, I have that book and although I haven't yet made something from it, it is still one of my favorite books. Did you start the Vest of Many Stitches yet? That one really caught my eye, partly because it looks so great and partly because it looks downright fun to work on, with all the different stitches.

Hi Karen and Barbie,

I started the Vest of many stitches fairly recently, and I'm about half way done with the back. There isn't a dull moment, and it needs concentration, but I'm enjoying the challenge. I redid the bobbles because I didn't like how they looked and made smaller, neater ones instead.

The gauge us 23 st/30 rows to 4" in stockinette over size US 5 needles, "light weight" yarn. The sample in the book is using Cascade/Austermann Smargd (100% wool)

Karen, still waiting for the yarn. They sent me two balls short and I am not starting it until I get those so secure in knowig I have enough dye lot. Can't wait ! Barbara

Oh good we can keep the conversation going since I KNOW you won't be done anytime soon ! What are you using for your yarn? Mine is Jo Sharp DK tweed in festival ( dusty lilac) . How are you doing your bobbles and how many are there if you don't mind telling. I am grateful for any advice ! What are you winding them on ? Barbara

Karen, I guess it is considered light weight but I gauged fine in the Jo Sharp /DK./ Mine is a 12 wpi 5.51 on a size 6 gauged. Hope mine works now. We thought it worked at the time ! Do opine if you have one ! My tag on the yarn says 20 stitches and 30 rows at size 6. I wrote a big tag on it as it had already been gauged because I second guess myself every time if I do not mark it ! I sometimes can't get back to the project for awhile and do not like to leave the yarn in the knitted swatch so it curls up.

I haven't picked out my yarn yet. :( I am hoping I can find something in my stash to use without buying more, I feel like my closet is full enough with stash that I should be able to shop from there, and not buy more! I have a lot of balls of a wool, cashmere and silk blend that I got at the last sale, and I think it's might be too heavy, but I'm going to swatch a gauge with it this weekend and see how it turns out.

Hi Barbara,

I'm using Patons Greta in beige, much like the example in the book. I figure I will be able to wear it over various colours without clashing! The yarn is DK, 60% wool and 40% acrylic and is only lightly twisted - a bit lopi-like. It knits up fine though and the stitches are well defined. I've used the stuff before with no problem. I'm using 4mm needles and got the stocking stitch gauge spot on. I googled for alternative knitted bobble methods and patterns, tried loads, and ended up devising one of my own. There's no winding involved! Are you thinking of pom poms as found on 'bobble' hats? Here you go: In the next stitch, k into the front, back, front, back (4 sts out of one). Turn and p4. Turn and SSK, K2 tog (2sts) Continue along row to next bobble. On return row decrease the 2 sts tog, either k2tog, SSK or sl1, K1, psso. to complete bobble, whichever you find easiest! If you use this bobble, ignore the instruction to slip the bobble stitch on the next row. As for how many there are, it depends on which size you are making. Just count the black blobs on the chart!
