I make crib blankets the size of a crib mattress, roughly 20"x36". It may be a little large as a "receiving" blanket but it'll go through preschool at least and probably longer.

The pattern that I just finished crocheting was a 28 inch square but I went to 28 x 32 so it was a little bigger. This was a baby afghan but I figure the bigger the better so the baby can use for longer.

The size of a crib I would say. You want to use it a bit longer than just when the baby is small, and they do grow very fast. 25" x 36" to 30" x
40". You do not just want to cover the baby, but sometimes wrap it around the child. That little bit extra is perfect for it. Mark you can always walk into a department store and look at the size of a receiving blanket and go from thereEls
