I have a question maybe someone in this group can answer. I used to go to this breast cancer site all the time figuring it would help women to get mammograms and have early detection of any problems. BUT....

When my husband was laid off of work several years ago, I had made an appointment w/ my ob/gyn in a hurry figuring our benefits would run out in 30 days. Then it occurred to me: what if they find something wrong and I have no benefits? So I canceled the appointment....

So, if these women get free mammograms and they find cancer, who pays for the follow up treatment if they couldn't even afford the test? I'm not saying they shouldn't do it....I'm just really and truly wondering "what if...and then what?" This is one of those bizarre questions that's plagued my for years and no one has ever been able to answer it...yet.

:-)

That can never be passed on too often. Thanks.

I have never thought of that, Jenn, but I would assume that if a charity is providing the mammograms, they would also be providing some kind of treatment. I am sure that some doctors give time (even if as a tax break) for these cases.

Jen, your question about this site and what happens if something IS found really got me thinking. I go to this as well as a host of other "click for charity" sites all the time, and what you posed made a LOT of sense and bothered me a lot.

So I wrote to the site. Below is the reply I received today. It makes me feel better; hope it does you too.

  • * * * * Thank you for writing,

The National Breast Cancer Foundation is responsible for providing mammograms for individuals who wouldn=B9t normally be able to afford such an expensive procedure. Not only do they provide the actual mammogram, but they also provide follow-up care for those who receive the mammograms, so they=B9re not just giving them a test and sending them on their way.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation can be contacted at:
