Cable Knitting for the Timid

I have been enjoying a class on cable knitting and what a beautiful technique it is! It is surprisingly easy to learn from an incredibly talented and patient teacher along with my wife as we practice together! ;)

Why I am posting about cable knitting is that I suspect a few have avoided the technique believing, as I did, that it would be difficult to master. I do recommend for those of us that are cable timid to take a class at your local yarn shop. Since I live in the Portland, Oregon area, I selected the Naked Sheep Knit Shop and was blessed to have the best knitting teacher I have experienced thus far: Kristin Kelly.

I so enjoy taking classes and learning from experienced knitters. Great way to learn, make new friends and experience others in their love of knitting.

Padishar Creel spun a FINE 'yarn':

Cables ARE fun, and easy... and am glad you've discovered them! LOVE the moniker: "the cable guy", does this mean you'll give us redneckisms in cable knitting as well? Perhaps a politicallyincorrect faerietail or two?? LOLOL, Hugs, Noreen

So glad you decided to learn cables. Now the fun begins

I'm a self-taught cabler, myself. The first major item I ever made, a pullover for my mom, used a lot of techniques that I had yet to do; cables, lace, twisted stitches, pretty much a smorgasbord of things other than basic knit and purl. I just made sure I had the proper tools and took off. The cables were easier than I thought, and the rest is history. Give me a great complicated-looking cable pattern over anything with more than 1 color any day.

I've had a lot of people compliment me on things I've made, then they add, "I can knit, but I could never do that." My stock response to these people is that there are only 3 things you can do with an individual stitch; knit, purl, or slip it and do nothing. Everything else is just doing things out of order or in combination. I've had a few people decide to try something more complicated than stockinette stitch after hearing that, and they all thanked me for helping to open up new doors for them.

I recently acquired Melissa Leapman's _Cables Untangled_, and oh my gods I am in cable heaven!! I want to make a bunch of the projects, and the stitch dictionary is nice. Almost makes me want to design my own sweater...almost
