Nice piece of work there, well done. As to the colours, when you have one dominant colour it is hard for the colour balancing routines to do their stuff (or in the past for a photo lab to balance it correctly). So a picture with a variety of colours is easier to get right. You may do better taking a maximum resolution image and then zooming in on the bits you want rather than filling your field of view with the single piece. Worth a try anyway.
